Better Organic Search Results

Better Organic ResultsA human edited directory “can” be a great resource if quality is the goal, and categories are well organized with links. What can go wrong is when a directory owner becomes beholden to the people that pay for submissions. It can be short sighted and in the long run the directory becomes cluttered with the equivalent of paid links. In time the directory has no value to human beings.

Now the same thing can happen with search engines. A recent article on Search Engine Land showed that some Google results were showing just 17% organic results now. One has to wonder if even Google will lose some respect and users may flock elsewhere to directories like Yelp that are less littered with ads. There starts to come a point where human edited results are better than the search engine.

To make matters worse, there has been a rise in products like Ad Block Plus, which actually cleans the ads off Google Search Results Pages and other places too. It must be a pretty big deal because the Independent is reporting that Google is likely paying Ad Block Plus not to block them by default. However, if you are reading this and want to block google ads from your search pages, just go to Settings > Extensions > Ad Block Plus > Options and uncheck “Allow some non intrusive advertising”. Then you too will ge served with only organic search results, instead of Google results that almost entirely ads.

As a directory owner, it is important to recognize what goes wrong with link directories as well as big sites like Google. Then you can start to have a longer term plan of making a directory that is really worthwhile. Maybe a good place to start is search for good sites to include in your directory with the Ads turned off!

And for one final tip, check out the search engine Duck Duck Go. It is fast, serves up great organic results, and with the use of what they call a “bang”, you can search virtually any engine or site much faster than just having one engine like Google.

Cheers to better searches with good organic results, and to quality directories!
