Matt Cutts on Penguin 2

Matt CuttsMatt Cutts from the Google Web Spam Team is letting people know that Penguin 2.0 coming this Summer and it should be one of the stronger actions by Google “dedicated to try to find black hat webspam”, as well as nice changes that will help “regular webmasters” and small to medium sized businesses.

As we have always tried to communicate clearly, if you are properly seeding your directory with good content, you will do very well long term. What is great about this update is there seems to be a focus on ways to help regular webmasters, and detecting if they are an authority in a specific space. He also said they will also be looking at Panda and finding signals of quality that were negatively affected previously.

On that point of detecting if a site is an authority in a space and how to become one, Matt had an interesting description entitled the Katamari Technique, where you start with small stuff and slowly build on an ever growing theme. Now is a great time to start thinking about the links off your homepage including top level categories, links to articles, videos and other content on your site. While other people are getting penalized, you can see your rankings climb!

Paid advertising, or advertorials, or native advertising, as Matt puts it, should not be passing pagerank. This is an indication that Google will be working harder to prevent pagerank from being passed. This may be what he means when he says he is “looking for some ways to deny the value” to web spammers.

Our interpretation of this coming action on paid advertising is this will be great for directories that are building their content properly. It is extremely important to recognize that being paid for a link review is not a paid link. As SEO firms are chased away from some of the black hat stuff, directories will be a place they will go for building quality links. If you are doing proper reviews, you can be in a great place to cash in.

There will be improvements in identifying hacked sites and communicating with webmasters to help them identify the problem whether that be malware or hidden links. In addition, they are working to provide more details about URLs for other problems on the site.

People doing link link spamming and various black hat spam will be “less likely to show up” once Penguin 2 is released. Many people running phpLD are “regular webmasters”, Penguin 2.0 could be a real score assuming the focus is on having a worthwhile directory. Start thinking what value you can add now, and you may be very pleased this Summer!
