Should Directories Display PageRank of Links?

Pagerank DisplayFor a long time it was en vogue to show the pagerank of each listing in the directory, and our script was able to get this value at submission or the link. There has been a good deal of discussion about whether this is important or not, or even if it might negatively impact your directory. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider.

Automated Querying for PageRank

Google clearly states in their terms of service that automatic or robotic queries are not acceptable, and they will take action like blocking sites from making requests to their search engine. It is not clear if they will actually penalize a site for checking PageRank, but if something is against their terms of service unquestionably that is a possibility.

Even if you do get the value for each link as it is submitted, which is less dubious in terms of automated queries, there is still the issue of what you will do when Google revises PageRank values. You could check each link one by one, but that would be very inefficient if you have a large directory. So then you are stuck looking for a tool to check pagerank which is problematic because it would use automatic queries.

Displaying and Sorting by PageRank

Then in phpLD assuming you have the value of the PageRank, the software has always made it possible to display the pagerank and/or sort by PageRank. But are you trusting that Google knows which sites are best, and the PageRank gives you that answer? Or is your job as a directory owner to decide for yourself which sites are the most valuable and therefore should be displayed first? Along these lines, many directory owners choose to sort in other ways like alphabetically or by date submitted.

What we at phpLD are Doing with PageRank

While we have always tried to provide what our customers would like to see in our software, we try to be prudent of those trends that will benefit the most people. We are not removing the option as many directory owners already have this data in their database, but increasingly we are not showing PageRank in templates we release by default, and it is more of an optional choice for the directory owner with the default choice being “off”.
