php Editor Programs

I am trying to get my head around php and to be able to modify or design appropriate templates. Looking at the php editors I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good editor that a total newbie can use?

I assume you are referring to the .tpl files.
You can actually open these in Dreamweaver and similar applications.

notepad will open it

Yes being doing it in both dereamweaver and notepad but is loading the page to the net and then opening it the only way to see the result or is there an editor that enable you to see what is going on as you change the script?
