What version are you using of v2 ?

I would suggest this.
1. Copy your existing directory to a new folder
2. Download the lastest version.
3. Overwrite your files in the new folder with the latest version, but do NOT overwrite the config file.
4. Go to /install and click next until finished
5. Copy over any template files that you need like header and footer.
6. When everything is working to your satisfaction, move the new version to the proper directory.

Thanks for the replys, i'm using v2.

All im worried about is that if i install a new copy in another directory, is that when i install i will overwrite the existing database and i've built up 70+ links .

Will installing a new copy try to recreate the database?

Cheers Tim

If you don't change the config file, then you'll be using the same database. When running install on an existing installation, it only updates the database with new tables or fields, but does not overwrite the existing data. Certainly, backup your database first to play it safe, but I've done this many times. You just hit OK through all the pages of the install.
