How to insert Web stat code

Can't find support forum for V3 so I'm posting here.

How do you add web stat code?

I tried adding it in the footer.tpl file right before the </body> tag but got a error message.

Try wrapping literal tags around it

The {literal}code here{/literal} did stop the error. Now I hope the web stats will work.
