View Full Version : "Fixing" featured links so they look like regular
Errk!

Could anyone tell me where the settings are for the appearance of featured links? I thought they might be in the CSS but if they are I don't see them.
I noticed that the text size on the featured links is slightly smaller than that of the regular links, and the site description seems to be a new paragraph instead of a regular line break (
) like the regular links. Where do I look to adjust this?

I don't have a clue where it is in the tabled template stuff, unless it's partially a function of the h* tagsets?
When I redid the template for tableless based on BJ's work, I included a specific .featured class, and another .descr class as well....

Here is the way if are using table based lay out.
or can just use vkaryl's template. he has done great job :)
open main.css
add following code at the end
Content visible to registered users only.
now create new file in "featured.tpl" in /templates directory. past following code in it
Content visible to registered users only.
Now open main.tpl
find
Content visible to registered users only.
replace with
Content visible to registered users only.
THis will look like http://www.cyborginfo.com/Arts/Music/

Hey, vkaryl, should I make daredashi blush, or should I leave that honor to you?
He's right though, you did a heckuva job on that template, and isn't it nice there are now TWO tableless phpld templates (http://kickasswebdesign.com/wordpress/2005/09/a-phpld-tableless-template-for-download/) to choose from!

Heh, I thought he did a great job himself with that tabled template stuff (which I really didn't have a clue about, being's how I haven't done tables in dog's years)! Y'know, won't be too long before I have a tableless template for phpRD too....
(Nah, not gonna go there, far as the blush thing goes.... already got told off for it once today....)

Thanks daredashi and vkaryl - I'll try that!
One thing I'm seeing mentioned here quite a bit is "tableless" PHPld - what is the difference?

If you look at your directory pages (using view source), you'll see that they're laid out in tables using table, table row (tr) and table data (td) tagsets. Years ago tables were the method of choice for web designers to lay out pages because the standards implementing css etc. weren't particularly well upheld by various browsers.
Tables have always been perfect for tabular data which was their original function in html for the internet. The fact that the web designers of the day chose to subvert their purpose to overall layout has haunted the 'net for a great number of years now.
"Tableless" layout relies on the cleaner, leaner css standards displayed by real browsers (everything but IE generally). It uses divs to lay out a page instead of tables. In general, tableless layout loads faster and allows far more flexibility in placing on your page so content loads before eye candy.
That's the basics....

Thanks for the explanation, vkaryl.
I implemented the changes daredashi posted, but am having a strange problem. I took out the Alexa thumbnail (I mention this but I don't think it has anything to do with it...) but it looks like the site title, URL, and description is not in a separate column as the Pagerank listing. So with long descriptions the text flows under the Pagerank image instead of staying under the title like with regular links.
Here's an example: {example no longer in service}
How can I fix this?
Here's my featured.tpl with the Alexa thumbnail removed:
Content visible to registered users only.
Also, while this is nice, I'm still not sure where I adjust the title in the featured links so they are the same size as regular links...any suggestions?

Content visible to registered users only.
Not sure if you're talking to me here...but if you are... I don't think it's as complicated as that. I'm sure it's just a text size attribute somewhere, I just can't find it anywhere. Apparently the text size of Featured Links titles is different from that of regular Link titles.

In the .featured class section that daredashi set up there, add Content visible to registered users only. to start with, and see what that does if anything.
Then you just continue to tweak font-size until it looks like you want. You can also add Content visible to registered users only. to the .featured section if you want those links to stand out more.

in my directory i have this done too the last month..and the rezibroken links have a different background too...for that u have to change a bit the main.tpl. if anyone is interested let me know..it works over the link types...
example:
{example no longer in service}
good is, it comes up on the top 20 and latest links too..so everyone see the different between normal...reci and featured :D

Ok, no problem...maybe there are better ways (only 1 tpl with the types inside, but i dont know how)..but for me its workin good in that way:
at first, make a backup of our main.tpl.
i have made 3 link.tpls. One for Featured, one for recibroken and one for normal. Inside this 3 tpls i had given the "titel" , the "discription" and the <td> Background arround own css names over the main.css. How that works i think u know!
Now to the listing:
open the main.tpl
search for:
Content visible to registered users only.
replace it with:
Content visible to registered users only.
cause normale links have the link type 2 and recibroken links get the link type 3. so eq 2 and eq 3 in that code! On the include file="here" u have to include your link.tpl for the type. btw featured links get the type 4.
if u want that the recibroken links are over the normal links u have to write it in that way:
Content visible to registered users only.
ok, i hope i am right..if not correct me...let me know..good luck M8
