Can I create custom fields in my directory and set as required or optional?

When I import is it ok to do a database to database migration or is it best to code through a script api?

Yes, we have some tutorials for doing this in the supporters forum.
We can help you with this if you need it.
We can also help you move a database. Usually, people provide an sql file or excel file.
