View Full Version : Directory Share Mod Announcements and Support

Directory Share has released a number of free mods which can be downloaded from the link in my signature. Previously we had provided support and announcements over at Digital Point forums but have decided to open a thread here to better handle support enquiries and get a better idea of what people want from new mods in the future.

I will continue to keep this thread updated with all new releases as and when they are made available.

To date, we have released the following free mods:

- Homepage Newsfeed

Allows you to display a newsfeed on the homepage of your directory to increase the content. Tested on all of the popular feeds such as Yahoo, BBC, ABC News, etc. The mod is very straight forward to install and configure, you can use any feed you wish and decide how many headlines should be displayed.

- Latest Featured Links

A very simple mod which allows you to display a list of the latest featured links which have been submitted to the directory. The mod will display the number of featured links as defined under the administration setting "Links on top pages:" under Settings > Directory.

- Most Popular Categories

Displays a linked list of the top 10 visited categories within your directory. The template can be customized to suit your directory and positioning of the top 10 list. The mod works with both rewrite enabled URL's and normal URL's as defined in your configuration.

- Random Quotes

This little addition to your site will allow you to display a random quote every time a page is requested. This is a highly effective method of introducing fresh content for the search engines, especially when operating a niche directory.

- Site of the Day

Allows you to display a "Site of the Day" on any of the pages you choose. The web site is randomly selected from the database; with each day loading a new site. An example of this mod in action can be seen on our homepage. This mod is very straight-forward and easy to install, just download the zip file and follow the install.txt contained within.

- Split Category Links

Split up the category links on your details page and increase your internal linking structure. Normally if a user submits to the category "Business » Investing » Other", the details page will display a single link back to that category. Install this mod and instead, your details page will generate a link for each sub category. One for "Business » Investing » Other", one for "Business » Investing" and one for "Business"!

Enjoy and if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

I am using your news feed and most popular catagories at www.directory.jodee.biz what I am wondering

1. How can I put the news feed in a table and how can I display other news feeds per categories
for instance arts display http://rss.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032083/device/rss/rss.xml
oh and btw they were a breeze to add as you gave good directions

Hi JoDee,

I have just responded to your email regarding the two points you asked.

To clarify for others, the newsfeed does come with a basic table set up, you just need to edit the template to reflect your directory style. This is the default code supplied with the mod:

Content visible to registered users only.

So you would just need to edit the <table> tag to add width, spacing, borders, etc.

hmmmm I did reply to this yesterday, hopefully the moderators will publish the post soon.

:)you replied to me in an email as I had sent you the question to your site your response was
"In response to your questions:

1. You can edit the file homepage_newsfeed.tpl to add your table. Just add it in as you would any normal html being careful not to delete any of the looping code. You cannot use this mod for displaying news on the category pages, we are working on a seperate mod for this purpose which will be released in the near future."

I have just released another 3 free phpLD mods, details below...

- Article of the Day

Allows you to display a "Article of the Day" on any of the pages you choose. The article is randomly selected from the database; with each day loading a new article. An example of this mod in action can be seen on our homepage. This mod is very straight-forward and easy to install, just download the zip file and follow the install.txt contained within.

- Category Newsfeed

Display a newsfeed on any of your category or sub category pages. Each category or sub category can be configured to display different feeds from unique sources and you can decide how many news entries to display on a per category basis. The mod has been tested on a wide variety of newsfeeds including some of the popular feeds such as Yahoo, BBC, ABC News, etc.

- Social Bookmarks

This mod allows you to list a series of social bookmarks on your directory for users to either bookmark your site, or bookmark your customers sites directly from the details page. There are various different configuration options which allow you to integrate into your directory. The mod currently supports all of the following social bookmarking sites: Blinklist, Delicious, Digg, Furl, Google, Magnolia, Reddit, Simpy, Spurl, StumbleUpon, Technorati and Yahoo.

As always, enjoy and let me know if you have any questions.

Are there any plans to make these available for ver. 2.1?

SilkySmooth
06-05-2007, 05:58 PM
Some of the mods I offer are compatible with older versions of phpLD, the only reason they don't state this is because I have not personally tested them myself. I will only list compatibility where I have tested them first hand.

For example, the Social Bookmarks mod... I have this morning been requested to install it on a site running 3.0.6 so next time I update the mods page the versions for this mod will be updated (It currently states 3.2).

My best advice would be to give them a try and if they don't work, let me know and then I will see if there is something I can do about it.

Really great mods.

I'm currently using the Category Newsfeed (http://www.directoryshare.com/free-phpld-mods.html#category-newsfeed) mod, but I have a question:

Is there anyway to automatically add feeds according the name of the category instead of adding a url for each category?

For example, if you visit any category you will see what talking about. My guess is that is not based on keywords, but on the category name.

SilkySmooth
06-18-2007, 11:44 AM
shadav, thanks for the comments, glad to see the mods are useful.

bepositive, there isn't a way to do this automatically at the moment.

As for directorydump.com, it looks like an0n has coded it to search the yahoo feeds based on the category, although I can't be sure, you would have to ask him ;)

My system is designed so that you can specify a different newsfeed for each category, rather than using the same provider for the whole site. So for example you could have business news from the BBC and technology news from CNN.

If you are looking for a search based system you might want to send an0n a PM to see if he will set you up with one.

I'm setting up a new site and I've got homepage newsfeed working perfectly on xamp at home, BUT Dreamhost does not permit fopen. Do you have code for a workaround as it would apply to your mod?

Hi,

Here is a version written using cURL instead.

Lines 19 to 38 of 'homepage_newsfeed.php' look like this:

Content visible to registered users only.

Change these lines to the following:

Content visible to registered users only.

Please test it out and let me know if you have any problems.

I have just released updated versions of the Homepage Newsfeed (http://www.directoryshare.com/free-phpld-mods.html#homepage-newsfeed) and Category Newsfeed (http://www.directoryshare.com/free-phpld-mods.html#category-newsfeed) mods. Both now come with full support for the cURL library which can be switched on using a flag within the code; full instructions are contained in the install files.

Note: If you are already using these mods on your directories, you do not need to upgrade. This release is purely for those users who's hosting companies have restricted the use of the PHP fopen function.

More updates and new mods will be released throughout the week.

I haven't been able to get the curl version working. false is working for me, on localhost - true does not, local or live

I do have curl enabled on xamp.

I posted about this very late last night after spending a bunch of hours trying different variations but I have zero knowledge in this area. That post went into moderation and ???

I'm temporarily using Feed2JS (http://feed2js.org/index.php?s=about) on the live site. I really do appreciate your efforts on this.

Silkysmooth...

Just a note that alot of companies such as hostdime has fopen off but you can enable it via custom php.ini and place it in the folder that has the file ( I usually just copy it to all since most accounts do not have shell to symlink it).

blogrock, glad you like the mods, however I'm afraid the current homepage newsfeed doesn't support multiple feeds at once. I will look into it and see if it would take much to implement.

jimbajimba!, thank you, always nice to know they are being used.

not2serious, I haven`t had chance to test the mods on v3.3 yet. I will give them a run through this weekend and see if any of them need updating. In the meantime, if you have any error messages, etc. Let me know here and I will see if I can debug it for you.

No error message, it has not affect. I created my template from the standard professional and there is no center container, which is where I had it placed in 3.2. Basically, I wanted to have it displayed above the center container of the template.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have a few hundred quote in my database and would like to have it included in my site.

Update: I left myself logged into the Admin panel and changed the files again, then I went to another page and the Random Quotes link appeared in the Directory menu (I am using the Top Menu in 3.3) - However, when I click on the Random Quotes link, I get this error:
Content visible to registered users only.

Hope this helps... I am looking forward to using this mod

I am having the same problem with Random Quote

If I try to login via FF when I click the proceed button, I get a blank screen.
In IE7 the screen will not load at all and then I get this error above the header upon refresh:
Content visible to registered users only.Below the Username and Password boxes, I get this error:
on line Content visible to registered users only.If I restore my backup files from before making the changes outlined in the install file which comes as part of the .zip everything is fine.

Also, I did clear the temp/templates cache (except for the index.html) after making the changes to the init.php and the table.php

Hey, just a quick note to let you know that all mods have been tested with version 3.3 and any changes needed to the mods have now been implemented. Please see below for more details:

Article of the Day - No changes.

Category Newsfeed - Slight change to the administration and structure.

Homepage Newsfeed - No changes.

Latest Featured Links - Update to install instructions and new files for clean installs.

Most Popular Categories - No changes.

Random Quotes - Slight change to the administration and structure.

not2serious, beldorian, go to the site and download the latest version installing the 3.3 set of files. Make sure you remove the old version first.

Site of the Day - No changes.

Social Bookmarks - Slight change to the administration and structure. Bookmark packs not affected.

Split Category Links - No changes, but have created blank canvas install for default phpLD 3.3.

All downloads now come with seperate install files for each version, 3.2, 3.3 etc. where applicable.

Please let me know if anyone has any problems.

Getting the same smarty errors I listed below on the admin/login.php

I made sure to delete all old files and to clear the temp/templates directory along with updating fresh admin/init.php and /include/table.php files

SilkySmooth
01-31-2008, 03:42 PM
beldorian, not sure those errors are directly related to the mod as it has no interaction login page.

Are you sure your following the instructions correctly, for example in step 6 of the installation your told to edit the 'init.php' file, you sure your not editing the 'admin/init.php' file by mistake?

I ran through the installation from start to finish for all of my mods yesterday on a fresh install of phpLD 3.3 and never encountered this error once. Not even when the mod required changes as the only thing that occured when installing the older version was that it would produce a blank page.

beldorian
01-31-2008, 04:19 PM
Update: When I add the require_once 'include/random_quotes.php'; into the /init.php above the closing php tag, it messes up the whole format of the page and makes all of the columns render vertically.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Howdy Silky -

What I am doing is editing the admin/init.php in step 3
The /included/tables.php in step 4
and then in step 5 I'm trying to login to the CP - I never get to step 6...

In IE - I get a blank page if I enter http://www.quotemyauto.com/admin (It does not forward me to the login.php)
If I enter this URL http://www.quotemyauto.com/admin/login.php - I get the login screen with the login box displaced (instead of in the center of the screen, it is lower and on the left side of the screen).

In FF - I get the smarty errors (for some reason, FF will load the login page normally, but when I enter my username and login and click proceed, it will generate the smarty errors.

I have not made any other modifications to my php files other than the updates from the Random Quotes Mod and if I take the mod out and restore files it is back to working. I would really like to work with you to get this fixed, if possible.

I will PM you the files so you can take a look at them.

Content visible to registered users only.Long time since this thread was replied to however I found it looking for answers to the same question.

Turns out it doesn't really go into a template. It's used to create a standard HTML link to a page that lists featured links so it's correct usage is simply:

My site_of_the_day.php in includefolder looks ike this:

Nice to see some great mods. I am using the homepage newsfeed mod in many sites. It works fine. Thanks for such a wonderful mod.

I need a help from you. The mod displays a short description of the post. What i need is to display the full description with an image (if any in the main post). Description can be restricted to 500/600 chars if larger than 1000 chars.

How can i do that with your mod? Please let me know.

Wow, lots of replies... sorry guys this forum seems very tempermental about emailing me when a response is made to the thread.

Deeplock, yep thats right, just need to add in that <br /> tag to seperate the cats per line.

detoam, Auspire...

Content visible to registered users only.

The link does go into a template. Typically this is the header.tpl or top_bar.tpl but it is impossible for me to know which because every single template is different.

The confusion comes because a lot of people beleive that this mod will produce a list of featured links wherever they insert the code. This is not it's intention, it has always been designed to be a self contained page as per it's description.

Pieti, James... (and for those who get blank Site / Article of the Day)...

Any rewrite mods that you have installed will not directly effect the appearance of a Site or Article. You WILL need to upgrade the link code to match what appears in your link.tpl file or articlelink.tpl file.

The mod however should still function and display a site or article.

If they do not it is likely that the mods have been installed and loaded before any data was added to the database, e.g. a clean install. If this happens just delete the text files of the same name which are located in the /temp/ directory. Otherwise wait 24 hours and it will refresh itself.

murko, the SOTD and AOTD mods are designed to run lightweight and thus use the system filetime to determine when they should be updated. The update is initiated by the "first load" of the day regardless of what time it is. Whether it is 00:01 or 04:01 whoever is first to load the homepage will initiate the update.

You need to check the system time on your server and set it to the timezone you desire. Most servers are set up to run using the timezone of the datacenter where the server is actually located.

3wlink, you shouldn't need to make any adjustments to the mod to achieve this. Just use a feed which passes this information in the description and that is what will be shown. The mod does not trim any data, that is determined by the feed that you are using.

Sorry about that James, didn't think. :o

SilkySmooth, I have just installed your 'Site of the Day' mod and it's excellent. Is there any way it can be modified to randomly display featured sites instead of all sites?

Thanks! :)

EDIT:

I managed it - I changed all instances of 'sotd' to 'link' and now working sweet. Thanks for the mod.

Been running homepage newsfeed and love it..

Added a Feedburner plugin to wordpress and now Homepage Newsfeed isn't working.. Change the code in the include to point to feedburner and it still doesn't work.. Point to the on site feed for the blog and nothing.. Turn Feedburner 'off' and is starts working again just fine..

Any thoughts on how I can get both to run together in peace and harmony??

My sotd which is running in the rightside.tpl on my homepage is copying the Thumbshot image from the last link.tpl (Latest 5 Links) at the bottom of the homepage.

Any ideas?

Thx!

Hi folks,

As it turns out, from my post a few up, when I have multiple featured links, it's showing all featured links and not just one. So I guess I need to change it back to sotd and adjust the php file to only pull in featured links instead of all links. Is this possible?

Thanks for any help! :)

Hi, I have installed the homepage newsfeed to this site (http://www.purelyauctions.com) , but can't seem to get it to work. I have the latest install v3.4. I am gathering that it is not suited to this version?
If so, would much need to be done to make it compatable?
thanks.

Hi SilkySmooth,

First of all big thanks for your MOD's. Great job!

I have installed the MOD "Split Category Links" and it works fine. Just a small bug in the v3.3 I have found. The description on the title bar is showing as "Company - Details - Array" instead of "Company - Details - Subcategory". Could you help me to fix it, please? Thanks!

Solved :

Simply enable URL rewriting in "admin-settings-Search Engine Optimization" and it will be run.

Hello SilkySmooth and thanks for your mods.

I installed "Split category links" in 3.4 and have a little problem.

The category is rightly parsed, but the URL's sufix is missing.
For exemple : "mydomain.com/index.php?c="

The category id seems to be missing after "c= ".

I updated templates/Chrome/detail.tpl as indicated and made modifications in detail.php.

Does somebody succesfully installed it in 3.4 version ?

Thanks in advance.
