How do I send my own variables to the header?

Hello,

I am trying to integrate my directory with phpBB
or a least make it appear integrated.
So far so good except..
I'm not very familiar with the smarty template system, And I was wondering if somebody could help me send my own variables to the header file,

ie. the best place to add this in the script, and the correct syntax.
