show links in parent category

i just got this reinstalled after fixing my issues with adding my template and i'm wondering if something is possible...

i have several parent & subcategories setup... i was wondering if it were possible to show the links from the subcategories in the parent category??? i'm asking because it makes the directory seem "empty" when you have to go two levels deep just to view the links...

so, here's what i'm looking at trying to have...

Parent = Hip-Hop
SubCat 1 = Official Sites
SubCat 2 = Unofficial Sites

i want Parent to show links from both SubCat 1 & 2... then when you click one of the SubCats, it will only show their links.

This same topic is getting some action over here:

There is no resolution at this time; the solution revolves around using recursion (a good article about this: http://www.zend.com/zend/art/recursion.php).
