I had a coder add the PHP mail() function to the /include/functions.php file and send an email subscription to my autoresponder using the name and email address of the submitter set as the "from" address so they are subscribed to my autoresponder.

They get a confirmation email immediately.

I also modified the text on the submit page to inform the submitter that they must confirm their subscription by clicking on a link in this confirmation before their link goes live. That way I meet the double-opt in requirements, instead of sending bulk spam.

So far it works like a charm.
