Is there any way a mod can be written that behaves like Dmoz? I give as an example the States of North America. Underneath the 50 odd states they have seperated by a <hr> some other categories that actually do belong in a cat of thier own and not symbolic. http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/ At present if you try to construct a table like this you get an alphabetical mish-mash where the other categories get mixed up with the 52 states, this spoils the whole page. I'm willing to contribute as usual to this so let me know asap if this can be done and how much I need to donate.
Cheers :)

Hi, yes I'd be happy to do this. I'll plan on talking to you about this in chat tomorrow. We just have to figure out the criteria for deciding which categories are selected in a given search. I'm thinking for a given keyword search, we would:
1) determine which links contain those keywords
2) In a separate listing show the categories of the links from #1
I really like your idea, and it will go hand in hand with what we are doing in 3.0 (from www.phpld.com):
"Also, there will be a method to run a tool that caches the category structure, so that we can more easily find the parent and child structures, making queries faster, so that we display category counts easier, build site maps, and remove the some of the current limitations."

Hey shortd81,
Thanks for what you have done to help us so far. Your help is much appreciated. I think in the case of your mod, the admin manually adds categories that are related to a given category. I know some people will like this a lot.
I think what we are planning is to show all categories in which links exist with keywords of the search (title or description). I am thinking we are going to need to do some more advanced indexing of the categories to pull this off and maintain high performance.
If you look on www.phpld.com you'll see one of the goals relates to this more advanced indexing.
What do you think?
Oh, and you asked you wrote phpld. I will take credit for having the "master plan" (at least initially), but I must say that many programmers have contributed. The script was started around 2001 I believe, but it's a long story.
