A big thanks to yktan for this mod, which will likely be added to future releases. This mod allows users to rate links, but only one rating per ip address is allowed.
Attention: this mod has been edited. Please read the entire thread!

Good one. But hopefully it will be only optional in future releases. I have seen it being misused mostly :(.

Hi ant1980,
The Mod is done for the lastest release of PHP Link Directory. If you are using RC4, you may have to follow some instructions from the first version of the Mod and some from the new version of the Mod.
Ie. The instruction for the part you're trying to change (for the first version of the Mod) is:
Content visible to registered users only.

Hi, attached is the Rating Mod that includes sorting by Rating in the index page.
For those who already applied Rating Mod v1.0.1, just do the following changes:
Open /index.php
Find:
Content visible to registered users only.
Replace with:
Content visible to registered users only.
Open /templates/main.tpl
Find:
Content visible to registered users only.
Add below:
Content visible to registered users only.

Hello

Content visible to registered users only.
Changed to this...
Content visible to registered users only.

Don't use WordPad to edit php files... it adds formatting and probably wordwrap.
You need a plain ascii text editor like NotePad or a php editor such as Crimson Editor (excellent and freeware -- download at http://www.crimsoneditor.com).

Another good free editor is Notepad2 from http://www.flos-freeware.ch - in fact, it's SO good I've set it to replace windows' notepad. Line counting, color coding, etc. standard....

what do you change to make the font smaller and change the color to grey or black on the "Rate It" link. I find it sticks out too much.

1. Original mod works with RC5.2
2. Here are some changes you can make to display a [Top Rated] in your Top Menu Bar:
(a) Locate the following code in /templates/top_bar.tpl:
Content visible to registered users only.
...and add the following afterwards:
Content visible to registered users only.
(b) Locate the following code in /index.php:
Content visible to registered users only.
...and add the following afterwards:
Content visible to registered users only.
(c) Locate the following code in /rss.php:
Content visible to registered users only.
...and add the following afterwards:
Content visible to registered users only.
I revised post and added (c). Otherwise, RSS feed was broken when you clicked on RSS icon on [Top Rated Listings] page.

Thanks YK! I have not tried it yet, but compared to other features of presenting links, I would prefer this feature as the default mode of sorting links.
Like a "Featured Links"*** section with a twist.
The way I envision to use the "rating" option is to feature only a subset of links for any given category, e.g., 5-10 links, included in a "Featured Links" section -- placed at the top of the page, just below the subcategories
I am also concerned about the point of seothatworks. So, the twist that I would like to do with this feature is that only the administrator -- in consultation with a board of advisers or editors -- will be doing the rating for specific categories. As such, the "rating" will appear only in the Admin page.
Since this will be a subset only of the total links in each category, below this "Featured links" section will be section of all links, maybe called "Regular Links" or some other more appealing section name. These "Regular Links" may have "top hits" as default sorting mechanism. And, the visitor has option to manipulate the sorting based on the other options currently available with Link Directory.
I think this can be done, just a matter of including more scripts.
cornelio0202

**I posted many of my wish list for an ideal Link Directory in this link:
{url removed because it is no longer active}
under the username cgc0202. However, there might be a glitch in the system, I cannot login as cgc0202, even with a new password. Maybe I was banned? *smiles* So, I am posting now as cornelio0202.
This feature is at the top of my wishlist, for the reasons indicated above.
I wish to thank you all, for all the great work you are doing. When I am not so broke, I hope to make a modest contribution, as a token of my appreciation for your work.
***For most of my sites, especially the ".org" and the ".net" domains, I will not include any "paid" featured links section. This will be inconsistent with a current feature of Link Directory:
"Every link type can have a different price or be set as free (only featured links cannot be free)"
Can this feature be placed under "optional" so that I can use the "Featured Links" section for the purpose indicated above?
In the ".com" websites, I may have an "advertised links" section, but instead of placing this section at the top, it will occupy a portion of the "right column" of a page, and will be marked clearly as "advertisements" at the top of this section.

I installed this mod (v102) and it just will not work!
I click on the rate link, and then select the rating, and submit - no errors, but the item is not rated at all.
No errors, nothing! So, for the moment, I have disabled it - I guess I will have to work on finding why it does not work for me.

I am having the same problem as "hosted" above. I double-checked the complete installation, and only recall having difficulty with one item, the "ENGINE = InnoDB" modifyer on the SQL file installation. Apparently, my MySQL installation does not accept this. Is it possible that this is the cause of my problem?
After I click on "Rate It," I am taken to a mostly-blank rating screen with a drop-down rating box and a "Rate This Link" button. There is no site information on the screen, but the url at the top does include the correct URL ID. I can see where it is supposed to display the URL and description (which are not displaying): <span class="url">- {$URL}</span>
{$DESCRIPTION}</p>
When I click on "Rate This Link," I am immediately returned to the same screen, no errors, no new information, and the item is not rated.
I have RC 5.2 installed with the following mods:
- Site thumbnails in pagerank area
- Pagerank moved to rate-it line
My directory is at www.chefsblogs.com/directory.
Anybody have any ideas why rate.php does not appear to be finding the proper URL ID for me? I am guessing that "hosted" is having the same problem.

Hi richm,
It sounds like the script isn't functioning because of some conflicts in the mods you have installed. I can have a look for you but troubleshooting takes some time and I will have to charge for it. Tell me if you are willing to pay for support.

Can you post your rate.php file. It seems that session ID is not being passed - not populating rate.tpl, and not passing link ID to rate.php. This would also explain why you return to same page after you submit.

This is my rate.php file. The only change I made was to reverse the order of the ratings, but I did that after I was having problems:
Content visible to registered users only.
And this is my rate.tpl file, which has not been modified:
Content visible to registered users only.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My first guess was that the problem was something that I did, but since someone else was experiencing the same problem, I thought it might be worth having someone who understands this code better take a look.
Thanks!

If that is the only change you made, try reuploading the original phpLD rate.php file (get from phpLD archive file) on top of old one. See what happens then.
richm
11-09-2005, 11:02 PM
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried reinstalling Mod 1.0.2 rate.php and rate.tpl files, but it did not resolve the problem. I also tried downloading and installing an earlier version of these files, and it did not work.
For grins, to see if the variable was being passed properly, I changed the "Rate It" link in link.tpl to:
Content visible to registered users only.
In this case, the rate-it link allowed me to EDIT the record, properly passing me to the correct record, and saving the new data. Therefore, I know that the concept of passing to a record is working. (I have in mind to create an if statement which checks to see what IP address I am at, and if I am accessing the system from home, it creates an EDIT button next to each record so I can edit while I am reviewing.)
So, since the ID field-passing is working (conceptually), I am wondering if the arrays and databases are configured properly on my system. Below are my tables.php entries, with the new rate fields in the first and last section:
Content visible to registered users only.
Does order matter in within each array in tables.php? I noticed that the RATE_* fields are added to the end of the SQL table structure, but the instructions had me add them to the middle of the array in tables.php.
The last several fields in my PLD_LINK file are:
LOCATION varchar(100) Yes NULL
RATE_TOTAL int(11) No 0
RATE_COUNT int(11) No 0
RATE decimal(3,2) No 0.00
RATE_ENABLED tinyint(4) No 1
(I added location earlier to allow people to enter a city/state - that is working).
When I browse my PLD_Config file, the last three entries are:
ENABLE_ID 0
ENABLE_BLANK 1
ENABLE_RATE 1
The structure of my PLD_LINK_RATE file is:
ID int(11) No auto_increment
LINK_ID int(11) No 0
IPADDRESS varchar(15) No
I played with modifying some records within MySQ, and was able to do so and have the numbers show up.
One other thing. In rate.tpl, I notice the following line:
<image src="images/no_22.gif"/>
The only no_22.gif I have was in the directory/install/images directory.
And, since this feature is not working, I modified the following line in rate.tpl:
Content visible to registered users only.
In addition to the disabled message, I tried to display the $ID field, which did not work. This field does not appear to be making it to rate.php (although it is in the url as rate.php?id=977).
Thanks for your help and patience in reading all of this. I have assumed that since someone else was having the same problem, the solution would easily bubble to the surface if we explored it more. Unfortunately, I am stumped.

Hi richm,
I tried to browse to your site at http://www.chefsblogs.com/directory but I always get a time-out. To help you, I probably need a cpanel access. Could you PM access to your server?
richm
11-15-2005, 09:32 PM
Sorry, I have turned the feature off, but I was perplexed as to why "hosted" and "righthosts" might be having the same problem. I cannot give cpanel access out as the server is not in my full control, but maybe one of them can.
I think I will make a stab at doing this again after the product is upgraded to 3.0. In the meantime, I will keep the database structure and use rating as an internal score (since I can edit it).
For now, I think I am going to hold off on further mods till the next version of the product is out.

I have some ideas to make this better and would also mean fresh content added etc.
What I would like to see is when someone rates the site then they can also post a review on it. How hard do you think this would be?
another minor thing is I think it would be better to have the default rating on 5 just in case it isn't selected before submitting and to be fair for the websites.
yktan
11-25-2005, 07:17 AM
Content visible to registered users only.
Hi righthosts, to make the default rating = 5, do the following:
Open templates\rate.tpl
Find:
Content visible to registered users only.
Replace with:
Content visible to registered users only.
As for the review suggestion, it is not hard at all but someone still has to do it. I would but I'm really tied up at the moment. Maybe someone else can do it?

Content visible to registered users only.
hey that worked well yktan, thanks a lot.
Yes it would be good to have this mod to hold reviews.
I made a similar thing for a mobile phone website I built on ASP
What I have in mind would work like this...
At the bottom of a website next to "rate it" there would be 2 other links if a review has been posted. So it would look like this:
The general page where a list of links are like this page : {url removed because it is no longer active} will have 3 of the last reviews under each website. These would be only be brief and there would be a link at the bottom of each review to read full review. You can see an example of this on this page (at the bottom):
{url removed because it is no longer active}
So at the bottom of the link there would be these option (depending on if a review has been posted or not)
Rate It - Write a Review - Read Full Review - Read All Reviews
Rate It & Write a Review would both lead to the rate it page
Read all reviews would be similar to this: {url removed because it is no longer active}
Rate it - This Rating page would have a form to fill out (optional)
It would hold a form like this: {url removed because it is no longer active}
Well I hope this is a start to get the actual design going, what do others think, any more ideas.
This would be very benifical as I know that traffic goes up considerably when there is review options

Thanks Casey - You are a scholar and and a gentleman. This fixed part of the problem. so that now I actually go the right record and display all the info. However, when I click to rate the item, I return to the blank rating screen (no record info), and the record is not rated. I am surprised and wonder why I am having this difficulty and others are not, why I need to grab an (int) version of the ID variable and others do not. Is it the version of PHP I am running (4.3.2)?
Here is my site. I will leave the Rate It button up for awhile if anyone wants to look at the problem.

Minor issue for us
How can we skin our site to have a header and footer in the rate.php file?

or can some one show us the code to make the pop up window for "rate it"
All other pages easy just this one.
If we include out code to the rate.php as header and footer rate.php works but returns a back page to us?

I installed that module today and got 2 bugs.
1. Add $id = $_GET['id']; I saw it on this topic later. And it's not fixed in the files to download still.
2. After I make the vote I get EXPIRY_DATE = 0000:00:00 00:00:00 in db for this link. It makes unvisible this link for the visitors.

Okay, I've been winging my way through all these mods and have a fair amount of them installed, working and customized. YAY. BUT I'm tripped up on this Ratings Mod on the simplest thing; mysql.
I have the first 2 of the 3 fields added to the table PLD_LINK but I can not get the 3rd table added! I keep getting a syntax error and I don't know enough to figure it out. Documentation searching was fruitless as well.
Here is what is supposed to be entered;
<code>`RATE` decimal(3,2) NOT NULL default '0.00',</code>
Is something glaring at me and I'm missing it because it's 2am? ;)
This is my last planned mod to add...wanted it done tonight but am probably packing it in till tomorrow. : (
Thanks for any pointers. I'm usually good at figuring things out but this one is ticking me off so figured I'd ask for some help.
Thanks!
Lauren

Wouldn'tcha know it....I figured it out not 2 minutes after I posted. I was entering the () around the 3,2 which apparently isn't proper.
Thanks anyhow.

Hi.
With 1.0.2 version of this mod and my PhpLd v2, when somebody clic in rate, the count (rate) is like this always 0.99 .... is it correct?
I beleive there was a fix for this. It's VSDan's MOD
goto www.monster-submit.com
If you are using it you *should* have access, otherwise you're using a MOD you did not donate for.

We have been using this mod on version 2 for a while with no issues.
Applied the $id = (int)$_GET['id']; in both places.
Seems that our rating works but the page after a rating posted is blank?
Any ideas? Seems to work but the page is blank after a rating?

^Bump anyone still no go on this issue above
Our host has not allowed any remote site to execute code so would this be stopping the rating script?
Down loaded and modded a new version of 2 and the rating script works but not on our site?

Actually if you read the thread you can piece together the original mod ..
which will not work on any current version without major editing.
If you want a working version buy VsDan's
If you want to code an original version without using any of vsdan's or anyone else's and want to provide it for free then please do. I am sure there are others who cant see the value in all the mods you get for 15.00 not to mention the support that goes with them.
I think it is time to go ahead and close this thread
