I'm pretty sure somewhere along the line that David thoght of this brilliant concept when we were discussing the upgrades for Version 3. I mentioned thumbnail.org and that brought the subject to the fore. I think down the line it will be a part of version three and may not work on version 2? Don't quote me on that one though. Version three has tons of ideas like this being planned, ready or on their way so perhaps you might want to try it,. I know that you get a little more help there also, somthing to do with being a supporter  Well if you wanted to pay toward the development of the thumbs issue and get the chance to have your idea viewed by the programmers quickers then buying Version 3 might be a short cut? Don't hold me on that but its what I would do 8)

Hi Thanks for that,
While I agree with all of the above I am still getting my head round things. I had to get someone to intall the directory I have now.
I will have to go and read up about upgrading.
Still I will look into donating until 3 is ready and I know my way round stuff a bit better.
Thanks again.

Yes that would be a great idea.
Alexa thumbnails are comming up slower by the day.
...and i used the Alexa image update tool several times and even after 7 days no image is displayed for some websites.

It would open up so many possibilities for the directory.
I took Kev's advice and bought 3.0 and paid for accsess to supportes forum and like I said I would also pay towards getting this thumbnail thing implemented.
So you prefer to host your own images?
Now would they be dynamic or set based of category?

Not sure I know what you mean by dynamic or set based ?
I want this feature for a T-shirt design directory that enables T-shirt designers and store owners to add links to their stores giving them the option of uploading a small image of their work.
Thanks

ok, i gotcha. it's basically what i was saying.
you want to be able to poll the database for a link to a 'hosted image' (as per your designers link provided) and if it exists then display, if not show something like N/A.
now, will you be hosting these images (they upload to *your* server, or would you prefer them to use their bandwidth?
If it is a live company, i would highly recommend you host, because you never know what kind of crazy images other people will upload and display.

Thanks for that,,
Yes I would host the images. I have been looking for a directory with that capabilities for ages.
Thanks again.

things you'll need to get you going:
1. modified submission.php file
2. image uploading script that validates and only accepts a certain image file type. (i.e. - .gif. jpg etc etc)
3. added field in to the db, to hold the picture link value, and is associated with the cutomer ID,
4. Modified pagerank.tpl

5. in the admin a permission system: "to allow or not allow" image uploading from submitters.

Anyone working yet on this mod?
I'm willing to pay a donation for a simple mod that can upload images in replace of the the broken Alexa images.
All i need is a tool in the link or featured-link admin panel where i can upload the images and host them via the db.
Send me a pm if you can do it.

I don't know how complex you want it but I think tarheit has managed to do exactly what you're describing i.e. assign an alternative image to each listing. Ive asked him in another post how he did it but have recieved no reply yet. Perhaps if more people ask he'll feel it more worth time to contribute the code. Although Im not sure whether his method totally supresses pagerank and alexa thumb mods or are switchable.
Its an option.

replace the code for alexa thumbnail with the the link to your thumbnail directory/{link url}.png, and then upload the thumbnails to ftp in that directory. thumbnails must be named as the links. (google.com.png).
u can use the ScreenGrab! plugin of firefox to take pictures of the links in your directory
