Good Day,
I'm new to this forum and I intend to establish a directory. phpLD has been recommended as directory software. Now I need to know what it can do - and what it can not do. Are there and requirements for using phpLD on a web site?

i guess my question would be to you is what do you want it to do? with a basic understanding of php, html and smarty there's really nothing you couldn't make it do.....

So long as your host has relatively current versions of PHP and mySQL it should work fine. Would be a plus to also have mod rewrite available for seo friendly URLs (most hosts have this).

Content visible to registered users only.It should become a suppliers directory for manufacturers, importers and distributors in South Africa. I already researved on url: suppliersdirectory.co.za
which should rank high if someone looks fo suppliers in SA. I would also like to allow international people to submit their websites and details, but make a distinction for searches between South African, African and global based suppliers.
Content visible to registered users only.I know how to use html, my knowledge on php is a bit limited.
Content visible to registered users only.... I would have to enquire my hosting provider recently put a new version for nomal web sites on. It's kind of a portal that allows one to manage the web site, emails and ftp. Would have to find out what the status of the PHP / mySQL is. As for the seo friendly URLs. you mean something that gives a descriptive url? i.e.:
directory.co.za/business/real_estate/ABCproperties.html
for a real estate agent calle ABC properties that submited his details under business / real estate
Now I would love to have it like this.

the directory comes as is, you set up the category structure however you see fit...
and yes the rewrite mod (if rewrite is allowed on your server) would show instead of the default
domain.tld/index.php?c=#
it would then be domain.tld/CATEGORY/
there are also instructions throughout the forum on how to rewrite the other pages of your directory (detail pages, article pages, latest ____ pages)

Just let us know if you have any more questions about the hosting requirements. Really, it is rare to have a host that does not work. Typically, linux is superior to windows when it comes to running PHP applications, but it works on both.
