The First Pages of the Directory Categories are URL-Search Engine Friendly for the Newer Versions of the Software - but clicking on Pages 2+ once the first pages get filled up - brings up URL with (?)

According to Google Engineer Blogs - these are being de-prioritized in the SERPs - if not filtered out -

I agree that google is less likely to index such pages.
Since it is also duplicate content, I think the best solution is to add a "no follow" tag to these links in top_bar.tpl

Do other people agree?

No david i think we should look at .htaccess and find the way to change it to like this htxp://www.sitename.com/category/2/
instead of htxp://www.sitename.com/category/?p=2

i knew there is way to do it.
i will look at it as well but others can look for it too as i am not good at mod-rewriting.

It gets a little complicated when you consider pagination and the xml links.
It can be done, but it will require some hours of work.

Try changing your .htaccess to the following. This works for me. although I think none of my categories have over 20 links now as I moved a lot to subcats.

Content visible to registered users only.
