View Full Version : How to install within a subdomain
Is it possible to install phplinkdirectory into a sub domain?
I've tried this but get some funny results. I've installed the script to say phpld.domain.tld, it installed fine and I set the site url to the sub domain.
The problem is whenever I access the directory through the sub domain the links are all wrong. When I click on a category it takes me to the categories URL but it still shows the index page.
Another problem is that the links "Submit links, Lattest links and Top Hits" display like this "http://phpld.domain.tld/phpld/submit.php" basically stating the installed directory twice?
When I access the site through the actual directory domain.tld/phpld everything works as it should. I've reinstalled and get the same results.
Has anyone found a workaround for this or do I have an isolated case.

You should have absolutely no problem but one user this morning did! To create a subdomain you can do it two ways.
directory.mainname.com or mainname.com/directory
It is the second one that I would suggest as this is the easiest as you simply create a new folder in your root directory.
From what I am seeing by your post you have effectively created 2 seperate sub domains. note the bold writing of what you have put....
http : //phpld.domain.tld/phpld/submit.php The bold parts are sub domains, that is they are not the primary domain, this would lead to the view that the commands may be getting called from both? You only need one subdomain not two.
hope this helps.
Kev
directory.mainname.com *IS* a subdomain
mainname.com/directory is *NOT* a subdomain
Well, I only have one sub domain "subdomain.domain.com" but for some reason when I access the script through the sub domain it "thinks" there are two... writing all my links like subdomain.domain.com/subdomain/submit.php when in fact, that second directory doesn’t exist at all... I guess I’m just going to use is in a regular directory as it works fine that way, just would of been nice to have a sub domain.
From what I can tell by looking at the code the reason it is adding the non-existent second directory is that the script doesn’t "know" its operating in a sub domain therefore adding the directory as if it were not. I set the url in admin to the sub domain but I think that option is mainly for the linking section.
subdomain.domain.com - is a sub domain
domain.com/subdirectory - is a subdirectory BUT can be linked to a virtual sub domain.

Hey cody, welcome to the forums.
I'm not sure whether you can or cannot use modrewrtie to fix this, but here is a link that may point you in the right direction:

I'm no modrewrite person myself, and all i can do is stand by and learn from what you learn, if you share. Good luck, sir :)
Oh, and as far as kev is concerned, he just seems to be a really bitter individual. Always thinks he's right, and will argue till the end even though he's wrong. Just how some people are. (i guess)
Hey, I still haven't found a solution (haven't looked to hard since it works fine from a standard directory.) But, I do think the problem originates within the code itself. I wonder if version 3 has this fixed?
Am I right is assuming version 2 is "Open source" but 3 is not?
Anyway, this script has great functionality and I found it extreamly easy to integrate in my design (I would give the link but I don't know what your linking policys are, don't want it to get deleted).
Needless to say when the directory goes live I'll give phplinkdirectory a plug in the site blog in addition to linking to it in the footer of the directory.
Cheers

I think i'll let the guy who thinks mainname.com/directory is a *subdomain*, help you on this one.
best of luck.

Hi cody,
Technically I should have said that both a www.thisisa.domain.com will act exactly the same as www.domain.com/directory, effectively creating a sub-domain in all but name as it gets called up seperately from the root, or perhaps I have servers from the planet zarg that do things other servers don't :? Never mind we can't all be experts now can we.
Goog luck Cody.

I know it has been done by others, but I don't recall how they did it.
If we do get a solution, we need to post it in the Knowledge Base.

Can you keep your personal opinions to yourself please, this is a forum for phpld not for you to criticise or comment on an individual basis. Your comment was absolutely uncalled for and unprofessional, I would appreciate you keeping your views to yourself as I have done. Thankyou.
Kevin

you chose to fallout with me over the internet on the 2nd of march. that post was dated the 1st of march. Regardless, just 'ignore' any previous posts prior to march 2nd, and any thereafter.
