These thing I believe shall be made configurable:

"Directory Home" - to be possible to change without search/replace in the code
and
description for main page - to be setup somewhere

I am just going to hack it via the template, but would prefer to wait for it to be implemented officially?

Probably it will be official (as language files that are easily editable) in 1-2 months.
