View Full Version : Need help: Error 404
Hello!
I bought latest version of the script few days ago and having some problems.
I created database and uploaded Articlescript to my server - everything looked fine. As required I changed permissions for templates_c folder to 777
I logged in to admin area and created some directories - they all showed up in the left column. Now if I click on any of new categories I get "Error 404" message.
I tried to add article from main page and from admin page - nothing happens and still "error 404" messages...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi wtms, I think you missed out .htaccess or it got corrupted. Try uploading that file again.

I think I got the same problem. I bought a website containing phplinkdirectory and I can see my categories but when I click on one I get a 404.
My webhotel ftp doesnt support the command "chmod" so I dont know if it really is 777 on temp etc
May it be that its a winserver?

PHP typically has more problems on Windows servers.
It would be good if you could learn more about your server.

Well, the only reason I bought a account on this webhotel is because it said it supported PHP n MySQL.. :(

What is webhotel? (never heard of it)
Can you ask your host about chmod? do they have a support department?

Sorry :) Im using to much of Swedish words. webhotel = hostprovider/webhost
I found something in my cpanel, filepermissions, and when I check .htaccess I found this:
Administrator -- RWXDPO
SYSTEM -- RWXDPO
IUSR_DEDI448 -- RX
NETWORK -- RX
NETWORK SERVICE -- RX
IUSR_DAVIDC77 -- RX

If you are using "cpanel", then there should be no problem.
http://www.cpanel.net/
This is the most used control panel on the net, and this means you are not on windows.

I got a answer back from my support:
It seems you are using URL rewrite. However, we do not support URL rewrite. LinkFreeze works almost the same as URL rewrite. Would you be interested in it?

I have not heard of Link Freeze before.
You can turn off mod rewrite in the admin area.

Any chance that you could just get a cheap linux hosting for about $6/month?
Ex. http://www.site5.com/hosting/

Hi Y,
I checked .htaccsess file and it is exactly like the original that came with the script. My guess is that this problem is related to "url-rewrite".
I have phpLD installed on one of my sites and if I enable "url-rewrite" feature from admin panel I get 404 errors all over the place.
I tried 3 more different directory scripts with this feature and same results - if "url-rewrite" is enabled I get 404's.
My host is 1&1. Is any one else using 1&1 and have "Url-rewrite" working?
Thanks for your help!

I tested the rewrite thingy and my site get messed up. I then had to delete all the files, upload them again and then everything works.. but a little bit buggy. :\
If I activate the rewrite then my site gets 404 too.
Then I have to delete n upload again.
Well, I guess I have to get another host.

Take a look at the last post here:

I think this may be an issue with 1&1
ewe 1&1 hosting.
sorry. just expressing opinion.
PM me and I will set up a hosting account for you...
Thanks, David!
I found your post on design forum and this did the trick for me:
{topic moved or deleted}
Just added rewrite-base (script base directory)
As soon as I finish some design tweaking I will post link to my site for your review.
Next step - LD...
