Correct statement to count all links under a parent cat?

With the show count featured enabled, it currently counts the number of links under the parent category, and counts the number of sub cats as a link. What I have been trying to do without success is have the total number of links under each parent category (including those in sub-cats) displayed instead. Does anyone have the correct sql statement to do this? Much appreciated!
