Is it fairly easy to upgrade from the free version to the 3.0 version?

Yes, it will keep the same database. The hardest part is usually updating the template, as there are many changes. If you are going with a new made for 3.3 template, then this makes things go much faster. The upgrade of the database should not take more than an hour in a majority of cases.
