Can anyone explain exactly why phplinkdirectory won't work with PHP as CGI? Thx
it's a dreamhost issue.
yes i AM on dreamhost. yes i HAVE contacted them. yes i AM RUNNING phpld with no probs.
do you need assistance in getting it setup on dreamhost, mr. manager, or can you handle the simple configuration of getting it done yourself?

Hey anon, tell us what you did.
To be perfectly honest, www.phpld.com is on dreamhost, and I never got it to work. :)
I do believe I made a post about it within the first few days of being here.
1. When installing the directory, make sure 'RUN AS CGI' *IS* checked.
2. run through the normal process of putting all information in etc etc.
3. when you come to the screen(last screen) to either a. view b. login as admin
you won't be able to login, but you can view the directory.
4 so, what you need to do is go back into your dreamhost hosting, and *UNCHECK* 'RUN AS CGI'
give it a few minutes to propagate, and all will be fine.
(btw, i'll tone things down if people learn to act more mature. otherwise, i'm gong to give what i get)

yeah whatever about that tone.
The question was why it does not run properly under PHP as CGI. So far no answer, just a suggestion to install under CGI and then uncheck the CGI option to get it to work.
I take it you don't know why it doesn't work under PHP as CGI then. Rather than repeat the question, which seems to have merit, I'll wait and see if anyone actually knows the answer.

I followed those steps on Dreamhost and it did not work. The installer choked on a the specifications test. Big Red X for "will probably have problems running PHP as CGI".
AlsoDreamhost runs MySQL on separate servers, so you need to set up your database manually. Those must have been old notes posted here.

Not speaking to anyone in particular, because blaming people is not worth anyone's time, but we need to stay focused on solving problems. Without this, we are all wasting our time.
Dreamhost is known for having issues with a number of PHP scripts. You can definitely make things work on Dreamhost, but it is very common to spend more time (than say cpanel) trying to figure out what you have to do. And from what I understand, Dreamhost does not generally help their customers all that much with issues involved with installing scripts.
I can install on cPanel in 2 minutes or less. cPanel is THE most widely used control panel. Plesk is the second most widely used, and I can install it their almost as fast.
I am on dreamhost, and the instructions i posted are 100% accurate and NOT outdated. Some people just seem to have a hard time following instructions properly.
look at my sig for gods sake. i JUST installed the script twice, with no problems 'on dreamhost'
In this case, the script, nor the host are the problem. It's the person trying to install it.

i have couple of dirs with dreamhost and they work perfectly fine to me.
Inside Dreamhost Control Panel,
when you adding the domain or if you have already added the domain,
remove the tick from the "Run PHP as CGI".
Deselect that default option
and then try. it should work or rather, it will work.

The original question was Content visible to registered users only. but everyone here wants to either say run it with the "PHP-as-cgi option unchecked" or else suggest that I can't read.
Funny, but I can read just fine. My question was does anyone know *why* it won't work with PHP as CGI, not "how do I change to not run PHP-as-CGI".
I guess it is related to the path settings on the host, where PHP calls are sent to a cgi bin somewhere to be executed in a safe environment, and that may impact includes and such, but I am not sure if even if that is true, I am not sure I understand why that would break phplinkdirectory.
Since I am the only one understanding the question (and I asked the question), I guess this thread has outlived its utility. Thanks for trying!
