What does make a hosting provider good for phpLD? Seems really basic php service and DB?

I only recommend the one in my signature the rest you have to hunt around for..

directories require lot of system resources due to hight vloume of visitors and their host should be quick in support issues and should have good uptime. that's why one need reliable and quality hosting.

I will second james opinion on hostdime.

he finally convinced me to switch to them abour 9mos ago or so and I havent had an issue and support times are much better ( you can call them)
