1 Site in 2 languages

I would like to make the same directory available in 2 languages. (english and french)

I was thinking that the main elements needing to be translated are the categories since I will be using the same links in both directories.

Note that I don't use articles, news and comments so I am not worried about those db tables. (at least not yet)

I was wondering: is there not a way to avoid having to edit the tpl files twice every time I want a change made to both languages?

What other elements do I need to consider for having the same site available in 2 languages?

I would suggest that you need to consider your readers. Are your readers or visitors understand what you are posting unto your site? I would also suggest that you will have to put translator widget into your side bar for your reader's convenience and to attract more visitors.

your users after registering can set in their profile what language they want the site to be displayed in
just make sure that the words/phrases to be translated are wrapped in the {l} {/l} tags
