sexyadultlistings.com

i just kind of search briefly through other directories...and by what seemed to be the most popular adult listings that were submitted...
and just because it's an adult directory ;) don't forget to make a webmasters category for those adult related advertising and affiliate sites ;) and hosting, since there are a lot of hosts that don't allow adult content (even directories) on their servers.

That's what I did when I started my directory, xxxp o r nlinks.info, you can take a look at it to give you some ideas, but just take Shadav's advice, and browse other adult directory's depending on how many categories you want to list.

Missed this when originally posted... Sorry.

Not sure about the hosting, but the owner I built the site for is based in the US.

I had a friend in the US that I helped setup an adult toys site and there were countless categories just for that so with a week or so of Google searches you can probably come up with lots of categories and sub-categories.

I guess with an adult directory, using PayPal is out for a payment processor for link reviews but there should be other options, maybe?
Does anyone know of a good international payment processor that will accept adult directories?

Does 2co allow it?
If so then as long as it is not recurring they handle PP also

another hint is to edit the paypal.tpl and change what the product is.

IE
<input type="hidden" name="item_name" value="Link to {$URL|trim} for {$smarty.const.DIRECTORY_TITLE|escape|trim}" />

to

<input type="hidden" name="item_name" value="service fee for listing" />

Or something to that nature

Like PayPal, 2CO does not allow adult-related products/services. I wouldn't recommend trying to pass a fast one on PayPal. They might catch on, and then cancel your account (and you could lose any money banked with PayPal). ccBill is an option, and the [Alternate Payment] mod in the phpLD_Vault supports ccBill. Note, that ccBill requires initial $750 registration fee and $375 annual fee if you want to process VISA. And, 14.5% processing fee - high risk processing (e.g., adult-related) usually comes with a price.

There is also Verotel. I could maybe write a payment mod for Verotel. Similar processing fees as ccBill, but not registration or annual fees. Since 2004/2005 VISA dropped the hammer on adult-related processing. Many processors went out of business, and tens of thousands of webmasters lost tens of millions of dollars as they were left holding the bag. Most now don't allow adult-related. A select few do, but at a stiff price.

unless ccbill has changed a lot recently and I mean A LOT I wouldnt pass a penny thru them

Got a bad bad history with them

this was years ago but I still harbour ill will toward them

I use a toss it account for directory listings with paypal never let it get to high at all so I didnt even consider that getting it froze then forfeited :(

I can remember the hammer dropping before then was around 2000-2001

when we (company I worked for) had to deposit 75G in an account that visa had access to "just in case" of chargebacks.

Will not even discuss the MC account

but I digress :)

Yeah, actually it was 2001. Man, can't believe it was that long ago. How times passes. I almost lost x number 1000's dollar as I did not know that my processor (Probilling) also did high risk processing. VISA dropped them, and Probilling focused solely on check processing before they folded a few months later. They came back months later, and I quickly demanded monies owed. A few like myself in the beginning got their money. I suspect most did not as they ran out of cash. They went out of business for the last time a few months later. They were a Canadian company, and it is difficult (if not impossible) for companies to get a banking presence for VISA-related high risk processing in Canada.

75G, ouch! Merchant accounts can be expensive in Canada. When I started 12 years ago, I was looking to apply for one. CIBC wanted $30,000 as deposit.

What is your bad history with ccBill? I have 100's of clients that use ccBill (relating to another product).

I was running a LOT of traffic thru a company affiliate program (tagline was "so you know you will get paid" ) that used them after the meltdown and I went on my own before I got out of it and long story short they did the usual bad traffic and bad signups junk and ccbill backed them over me ....

I cant stand them and i know its personal LOL

Dont really miss that business at all .

Well, one thing about cc processors, seems they all have as many followers as detractors. I don't really have anything good or bad to say about ccBill as I have no direct experience with them. But, it is an ugly business, so it's easy to see how people can have complaints with any given processor. Dang capitalism and free markets =)

as of yet paypal hasn't said squat to me about using them :)
I may change the tpl like you suggested

I had asked them once on the topic...because their TOS/AUP isn't quite clear...it states about products and physical goods...not listings...and since I have an adult directory plus I allow tobacco and gambling sites on THL I asked paypal...first answer I got was cryptic, then quoting their TOS...so again i replied...then the smart ass said even listings would be against their TOS...
so really if one wanted to press the issue...their TOS/AUP only states about accepting payments for physical goods...not about listings

but then again it's all a he said/she said and of course they will take your money and run lol

I wouldn't mind trying another option...but don't want to pay for something and it bite me in the butt...

With the site I set up for someone at sexshoplinks.com, PayPal dropped him before he even got a link submission and it's hardly hardcore.... just a few links to 3rd party sites selling lingerie and 'toys'.

I also use AlertPay (based in Canada I believe) as they will transfer money direct to my Lithuanian back account, whereas PayPal refuse to do it, even if you have a Lithuanian PayPal account.

I'm waiting for Amazon Payments to get their finger out and expand their ridiculous 'US Bank Account' only poilcy. Hopefully when (or if) they do, it will give PayPal something to think about.

Bruce.

Nice looking site you did for them Bruce. Do you know if they setup their PayPal email as *at sexshoplinks.com? If so, that may have been a red flag for them. Possibly could do a generic email address for payments and then do the template code modification James suggested. Then no information is sent related to the site.

I may have to look at the Amazon payments to see how they compare to PayPal. I have a US bank account but live in Thailand now. Have to see if that is ok to use and access from here, not that I am bothering with setting up adult sites - I hear that area has way too many chargebacks and probably the main reason PayPal and many processors don't want to deal with it.

It depends on what you need.

That site was modded VERY heavily with of coding and function unique to them. Many of the mods were third party, so payment would need to be made to the mod creators.

Also, that particular template was designed specifically for them and they 'own' it, so cannot be used again without their permission. I have however been given licence to use for other projects as long as it's not in the exact form as they use it (i.e. Different colours and graphics etc).

PM me with your 'needs' and we can work out something.

Bruce.

google checkout could be the way forward, would this be able to easily be implemented into PHPLD?

If you want, ask VSDan if he will add it to his mod, and if that doesn't work, submit a job (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/jobs/), and we might be able to help for cheap or free.
