View Full Version : Disabling parent categories in drop down list

One of my big frustrations (I'm sure everyone else too) is users submitting to parent categories instead of the proper subcategory. It would be great if there was a mod to only allow users to select subcategories and not parents in the drop down list during submit. Has anyone does this before? Thanks!

Yes, it's doable.

Actually, I had to submit a site to a 'base' category (shopping) because do not possess the appropriate sub-cat, but the 'base' was appropriate.

here is a suggestive alternative:

Get a 'suggest category' up and running. While It won't stop people from submitting to the base category, It will help people such as myself who do submit appropriately into a sub-cats, as long as the sub-cat exists.

Another solution or possible help would be to disable the submit link button on the main page. that way, they are forced to at least start searching for a category. If they do that, then the category they are in when they hit submit will be selected by default.

Would be a simple fix, let us know if you want to try it.

(and no, it's not exactly what you want. But it's at least a start for you.)

Opti, it's not just disabling from the homepage, like the link posted above.
He wants Parent Cats to not have the ability to be submitted to.

Thanks Opti, that would be a simple fix, but not exactly what I am trying to accomplish. I want to just disable parent Cats in the drop down list as Anon said. I also had "Suggest Category" on the site for a while, but I changed to the contact form instead. I have been messing around with the functions.php, but no luck yet. Then again, I'm no PHP wiz :)

jay, i am no php wiz either. no prior experience (other than a test site i made) with php.

I'm pretty sure you can do it.

goto {malware warning found at this link - removed} and try to submit to a 'parent' category.

That's what you're after right?

(yea opti, it's part of deep link mod too  )

Rob, Not exactly what I am trying. I want to have the standard drop down from phpld with the parents just greyed out or disabled somehow. You have an awesome looking directory by the way. I'm jealous :)

LMAO Just kidding Rob
