Adding fields to registration form?

Hi,

I want to create a directory where only members of certain associations can join and advertise their link.

1/ So can I add fields to the registration form which asks them to enter their association name and membership number?

2/ I can then verify their membership with that assiation before manually approving their listing. Or, if they also entered their association email address, is there a way I can set up an auto email to that association asking for verification?

I hope this makes sense and is somehow possible.
