I just went live with an experiment on www.linkfab.com
Only Show Non-Empty Categories
It now only displays non-empty categories. A "non-empty" category is defined as any category that does not contain a link or article AND does not have a child category that contains a link or article.
People can still submit to empty categories, and as soon as the link is active, the category will display.
Only Links with PageRank
This coincides with another experiment in which all links must have a pagerank of 1 or greater AND they are automatically approved (if they don't contain certain spammy keywords).
Edit in Place
And yet another experiment: Edit in Place
I have a mod setup that allows me to click from the frontend on a link, description or URL, and change in on the spot. I have been editing the title and or description of most links that are submitted.
I have also been adding some new quality links to the directory every day, so hopefully soon, I will have a directory that:
1. Contains a higher concentration of quality links
2. Contains unique content on nearly every page
3. Does not replicate titles and descriptions that are submitted on other sites, further adding to the uniqueness of the directory.
If anyone is interested in starting their own directory with these 3 mods installed, I would be happy to install it for you for about 2-3 hours of work ($60-90). Would work best on a fresh install. Keep in mind some of this is experimental and may have some small bugs, so I can't guarantee "perfection", but it is working well for me so far.
