Should the email show up in the sent emails report?

I am having trouble getting the emailer to send out when people submit links, and the links are confirmed. When I tested with my email addy last night it worked no problem, however today it does not seem to be working for any of my different sites.

Should I be using the phpmail function or smtp?

Any suggestions? I have been getting alot of invalid email return notices, so there is some mail going out. It just seems strange that it is not working for my own email address.
