I am considering moving over from SiteSift for my next directory due to an unfortunate amount of online support but I do have a few quick questions. If one choose the 2.0 free version and later decides to upgrade to 3.4 how seemless is the upgrade? Do ya'll still charge folks for support for the paid version of 3.x?

You can get more support by being part of the Supporters Forum, which costs $10. Upgrading can take a couple of hours if you haven't done it before. It is just a matter of backing everything up and following the instructions, and then hoping there aren't any problems. In some cases, people will get in a situation where they require a couple hours of help from someone, and unfortunately we have to charge. If you are pretty good about solving some problems yourself, and being patient but persistent in the supporters forum, it is unlikely you would need to pay for additional support. I hope that gives you some idea what to expect.
Going from 2.0 --> 3.xxx there will be design changes required.
I personally came in at 3.0, and haven't had to change anything at all in terms of design.
If you do make customizations in any of the 3.xxx of course those will need to be transfered over onto and into any new setup.
3.04 has some changes in it that will require you to make modications for your add-on MODs to work.
I am not trying to sell you anything, but in terms of a 'starting point' I'd highly suggest getting in on the latest.
However, if you would just like to test the script out, 2.0 is the way to go.
If you give 2.0 a shot and then later on want to get your db into 3.0, I'll personally help you.

One final question. I read another post regarding your future upgrades to the script that will incorpoate a few techniques used by deleon from dp. Will these updates be a part of 3.x or will they be a part of a 4.0? the reason I ask is because I don't mind dropping the money to give it a try but I am hesitant on spending it to see a 4.0 come out and then have to turn around and spend the money for the 4.0 upgrade. Or are the future upgrades for paid members free for one year or just for the current version 3.x? Thanks. In regards to the added support I honestly doubt I will need an extensive amount of support as I have already created a few custom scripts for my sitesift directory and am quite certain I will have no problems modifying the php script to suit my needs but I would like the option available for some of the more advanced codes I do plan on writing for my next directory.

I'll have to search for it again but I am about 98% sure that it was from the owner of this script....am pretty sure it was in the dp directory forums but I'll have to find it again. It was regarding a few future updates to the directory like login/log out for editing abilities, top submitted/rated, and a few other things...was earlier today so I'll have to refind it to find out exactly what was all to be included in this talked about upgrade.
