Hi guys,

I really love your script and they great support that is offered by the people in this forum!

I have one suggestion to improve PHP Link Directory to make it more searchengine friendly. And I would like to open this thread to discuss this idea.

The reason for many webmaster to submit theire website to a directory is to drive traffic to theire site and to get a better google pagerank.

How much pagerank is passed on to a linked site is determined by a lot of factors and one that is crucial to a directory is the amount of links on one page.....google devalues so called linkfrarms - pages with a lot of links-.

This could become an issue with php link directrory in the future in my opinion.

What do you guys think about this?

My suggestion would be to change php link directory a little bit and start with the categories and then list the titles of the websites included in the directory and then add a new page that features exclusively one submitted website in the directory with a descritption and some more information and the static HTML link to the page....that way the links on one page would be reduced a great deal!

Anyway just an idea for future releases!!!!

Another feature I would really love would be custom fields that can be added in the backend and defined by the admin i.e.

name of site

url

and if I need another field I just switch on the a custom field and name it

logo

Cheers

OK, I agree with you to a degree. The problem is, (and I dont think there is a definitive answer available), is it worth more to have one outbound link on a page which is three levels deep on a site, or a link on a page with 50 others on a page 2 levels deep....?

As an example, my wifes site has a homepage PR of 3. The top level cats have PR2 (most, some PR1) and the subcats have PR1 (some PR0). The product pages almost all have PR0. Now I am aware that PageRank is not the be all and end all of what weighting a page is given, but I also know its a pretty **censored****censored****censored****censored** good indicator.

Would you rather have a link with 50 others on a page given at least some importance and recognition, or a link on a page all to yourself on a page which is irrelelvant in the eyes of the bots?

Also, the page rank that is then passed onto your site is reduced accordingly.

On the flip side, a single page per link adds loads of great content in the eyes of the bots and will probably help with your directories listing in the search engines, but using your own logic, if a page with nothing but links on it is seen as a link farm, surely the subcat page with listings of each link will STILL be considered a link farm, regardless of whether the links are internal within your own site, or external directly to your subscribers sites....

Good debate to start, but I think this could be a nogo.

However, I would like to see the urls re-written - instead of:
htxp://www.demosite.com/links/Category/SubCategory

I would like to see
htxp://www.demosite.com/links/category-subcategory.html

Or ideally (get rid of the links subdir which most people will be using):
htxp://www.demosite.com/category-subcategory.html

In the eyes of the bots, this has moved EXACTLY the same page up 3 levels on your domain, increasing its importance, weighting and therefore seo capability. This has been shown by the huge success sites have had usingt Chemo's Ultimate SEO contrib for osCommerce as opposed to the others available which almost all use the same method as currently employed with phpld.

My ideas. Comments welcome.
