View Full Version : New List of Mod Requests
David

Here follows some mods that have been requested plus some others. I know there are some people that would like to have them done, as well as programmers that want to contribute, but also be paid for their time, so I am going to try to give what I think is a suggested amount, and then we'll see how others agree. :)
Pagination of links: we really need this one bad. Some people have large categories, and they need the links separated into pages, with a way to specify how many per page. Remember, mod_rewrite must accomodate the pagination. Ap0stle is probably going to be working on this one.
Thumbnails next to links: The way I see this one working is hopefully there is a function in gd that allows a screen capture. I'm sure there is a script floating around that does this, and then we'll need to find an ideal size for the screen shots. Poeple might also like to specify another image. Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
Import from DMOZ:
1) Import everything
2) Import 1 category
3) Import just the category structure
4) Import 1 category and all subcategories
Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
Link to Us Page: This would be a page that pulls the Site Title, url and description, along with some text detailing how to link. There would be a tpl file to allow for easy customization. Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
Notification of Failure on Reciprocal Link: Drawing from yktan's email extension, we would first run the validation of reciprocal links. For those whose reciprocation status has changed from yes to no, we would send them an email letting them know we can no longer find their link and that we have disabled their link. All they have to do to enable again is to visit a page (like yktan's mod) and enter the url where they have placed the link. Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
Show Blank if PageRank N/A: This is a simple mod where we would show a blank spacer.gif in the case pagerank equals n/a. Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
CSS Control: add some funtions to allow the css to be modified from within the admin area. Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
Rename Directory Home: Some people would prefer to use another name besides "Directory Home". Add the ability to change this in admin. Anyone want to volunteer a price they would accept for doing the work, or a donation they would be willing to give to receive the work?
Separate Pages for each link: at the end of the description for each link would be a link called "Details", which would go to a separate page with the link title, url and description, and with seo friendly url and <title> of course. Also, must be compatible with mod rewrite.
Admin Area Search: For people with a lot of links or categories, it's tedious sometimes to find things by using sorting alone, so it would be great to be able to search on a couple of the fields.

Hi David, I'm interested in doing the follow Mods:
(1) Notification of Failure on Reciprocal Link - for $35
(2) Rename Directory Home - for $20
Anyone care to chip in to get the Mods done?

Modify Category for a Link in Admin Panel
Have the current category for links as "current selection" in a drop down box so that it can be easily changed in the ACP. This would be very useful for those cases where a category becomes too large and you create a subcategory and need to move certain links ionto the subcategory.

Thought I'd let everyone know that I'm working on Paging right now.
Should be done fairly soon, please consider a donation for the site and the services of the talented people here. It's not just extra money but for some it helps pay the bills.
Thank you for choosing PHPLD, where the support and kindness is second to none. (Because we killed the others... Shhh......)

I can add in the star rating functionality since I will be revisiting the Rating Mod. Any talented graphics guy wanna provide me with images of the stars?

It would be useful also a "Sort by Rating" link (Ex: Sort by: PageRank | Hits | Alphabetical | Rating)

DMOZ Extractor
A long time ago I made a real basic dmoz extractor. It just crawls a certain directory on dmoz and adds it to a database to crawl. It also adds categories and links that aren't already in the database. I'm working on it now and I'll set it up so it'll input the data into the phpld database. It's a web based crawler and has a few bugs but I'll try to stick it in the Mods section soon

Very cool, f1gm3nt
And once you get the mod completed, I'll bet you'll get help from others too, and we'll get it working perfect.
That will be awesome as many have requested this.

Hi ant1980, I've added the Sort by Rating feature. Please have a look at the following thread:

Maybe you could use these:

Link to Us Page:
I could do that one, would be my first real PHP script! 20 $ ok? Or I can do it for free if I get the Link pagination in exchange. Let me know.

Hi Jim_Westergren, those stars are great!
I know I'm pushing it but is it possible to have half stars too (ie, 1 1/2, 2 1/2, 3 1/2, 4 1/2)? Also, is it possible to have the background transparent? So that when users customise the look with dark background, it doesn't look so out-of-place. Thanks!

I was actually not the one that made them but yes it is possible to make what you write but it would take some time. Also I think they should be a bit smaller, no?
Could I get something for doing it? Because I will not use this mod on my site. Thanks. If not some $ maybe a good backlink?

Hi Jim_Westergren, sorry I thought you're one of those graphics wizard who can whip out stuff effortlessly
No worries Jim, when I get the time, I'll open up my dust-covered Photoshop.
Thanks a lot.

I have that 90% done, but only as a simple script that outputs static files, with simple template modification. That however requires manual servicing every time new links are added.
I guess probably dynamic code solution integrated into PHPLD would be much more preferrable?

Would it be a good idea to make a search form in the admin part?
Error notification: when a visitor find a link that doesn't work he can press an erorr link (button), this let's the moderator know that the link doesn't work any more.

Yes, especially search in the admin is important to me too.
I hope we will get some donations to help us soon.

Would you consider more suggestions?
I wish I know how to code myself, I would have liked to help the effort of the dedicated group here behind Link Directory. However, since I am not a programmer, what I would like to contribute to the group are my impressions with the features of other "link directories" that I have evaluated, so far. Some have good points that may be useful for Link Directory being developed here.
I will post the suggestions as separate threads in this Mod request section.
By the way, is the "star" rating that the group is talking about here more like a "quality review rating"? What I meant was is the "star rating" looks like it is different from the "popularity" or hit rating that is adopted here; based from this comment:
Content visible to registered users only.
What is the difference between PageRank and Hits, as bases for sorting?
The other thing that I want to suggest, another possible way to raise money and a common practice among some of the "open source groups", is to create a model whereby users of the Link Directory may opt to have the link "Link Directory" removed, for a fee, say $50.
Just a thought. Don't be mad if it offends your sensibilities or this is against the rules of open source.

[REQ] Backup and Restore database mod.
David
09-26-2005, 04:17 PM
Romario, a mod like this will only work well for a small database, and phpmyadmin already does this, as does the backup for most control panels. This is the reason we have not pursued this mod.

I'd much prefer to have seperate pages for each link, moving the direct link to the site onto that page. This means more pages in your directory for search engines to index - more pages indexed = better ranking.
What info each page displays would be up to the individual running the directory script.
The info could include:
1. General info about the site like Title, URL, Hits
2. A Rating System
3. Thumbnail of the site.
4. Related Sites - linking to other pages in the directory.
5. Comments
6. A link/login box for the orginal owner to edit their listing.
Just throwing some ideas out there :)

Yes, this was in 1.0, and I like this idea too. I'm not of any thumbnail creators that will work on all servers, but that would be cool. We could allow people to place other internal links from their site on the detail page, as well as a longer description.

Well, instead of creating a thumbnail directly from the site, you could provide an image upload option instead.
Do you think this idea of a seperate page per listing will be added to PLD in the near future? If not I might look into creating a mod (when I have the time).

1) top search terms
2) top categories
3) top subcategories
4) top links
all in one area at the bottom (or right) of the LD...
also number of hits shown for each link and category - not only in admin but actually on the page the client sees itself (updated every so often not every refresh)
I am willing to chip in for this if anyone else can help also...
how much and who is willing to do this?
thanks

when searching for things in my start up directory i noticed that results are not organized by subdirectory or category... this will prove a large problem with larger directories....
