404 error pages conflicting with Google sitemaps

Has anyone come up with a fix or solution to the .htaccess file where it redirects all wrong urls to main index page of site. The only acceptable redirect is a 301 and because of this .htaccess it is not making it possible for a true 404 error page so google will not accept sitemaps without a proper 404 page that it can verify.

From what I can see if I change the .htaccess file it will make the whole program go down. Please Help!

You'll find this issue is quite prevalent on most applications that use htaccess and mod rewrite. We actually have a solution in the 3.0 version of the script. It is not a simple mod.
