Hi

I just started using PHP Link Directory and I love it!!!

I was just wondering if it was possible to build the list of subcategories in the left nav bar in a "Single Column" while the main page showed the 2 or 3 columns (whatever option selected from admin panel).

Actually, I want to build a webdir which looked like: http://www.massivelinks.com/

I did check the forum for a solution but couldn't find anything which would allow me to get the above done.

Please help! Any help in this regards would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I am using the PHP Link Directory version 2 on mysite.

Many thanks in advance.

No, actually I wanted the subcategories to be listed on the left nav. Is there any way I can do this? BTW, the link you asked me to checkout... it's a very nicely done webdir. Seems like you have put a lots of work into it.

Thanks :)

Content visible to registered users only.
I understand what you mean. Think though... if you are already in a category, where is the necessity to be seeing the same sub-cats on the side that you can see in the the middle. just seems liek overhead more than anything. Now, if you have all main categories on the side, nomatter what category you are it, that would allow you to jump from one Parent Category to another.

Content visible to registered users only.

You are right and I am almost convinced that you may be on the right track :) BUT what if I ONLY wanted the sub categories in the leftnav - all in one single column (that's what i meant originally - sorry for not being so clear). I don't want them to be on top (in the middle). In any case, there's going to be navigation bar on top of each page.. if anyone thought about backtracking to the category page then they can simply click on the navigation bar and go to the parent category.

The reason why I am insisting on having subcategories only on the page is because I think that it's better for Google Adsense to pickup as many relevant keywords on the same page as possible in order to deliver the best ads possible for a page. Having categories on the same page might dilute adsense somewhat :) Well... Atleast I wanted to have the option to try out thingsthisway to see what works better.

BTW Thanks for replying so quicky. I really appreciate all the help you or anyoneelse can offer :)

Having the sub-cats on the left is a nice layout to have, but in one line would not look so good at all, ecspecially for having so many sub-cats.

Now, you can possibly have a script where it will show on the left side the latest links added in certain sub-cats, this way you're not filling your entire left side with sub-cats, it's better to have them listed with the main cats in the main center page like Rob has on his directory.

But to be very honest with you, most viewers like the sub-cats listed below the main cats to get an idea of what to expect in that main cat. This keeps viewers from posting links in random sub-cats that they think is right for their site.

Just a thought to throw in there incase you didn't think about it.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Finally I am convinced that having subdirs in a single column on all pages (but the main page) is not such a good idea... As I was suggested earlier that I should have the main categories in a column on all pages... I WANT IT! Pls if someone can suggest me how to do this ... I'd really appreciate it... It's been already done... but I couldn't find the instructions...

Pls guys help me with this...

Many thanks in advance

I got main categories on all pages xcept main. It is a nice feature, but currently I do not want to give up my code.
Sorry, but I am working really hard on a new project that I want to spilt into three projects, and I want it unique... for now.
I may write a template when I get the time, and that will hvae the cats on the side.

@Deepimpact71

Hmm..here is an a idea to get the ball rolling;)

This mod calls the main categories to the footer of all pages except, of course, the main page:

Categories in footer mod (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2768)

This is the fundemental of what you want to do which is essentially call the main categories. You can use this mod to do so then attempt to display the call in a left hand column instead of the footer. If you attempt this, the footer.tpl code is not entirely complete. Follow all instructions posted by VSDan except exchange the footer.tpl code step for this code:

Horizontal alignment, suitable for placing call in footer:

Content visible to registered users only.

OR

Vertical alignment, suitable for placing call in column:

Content visible to registered users only.

*Also where VSDan says edit main.php this will be your index.php

With the category call complete you can then make a post in Design for someone to help guide creating a left hand column which you can then place the above Cat call in instead of the footer.

Good Luck!

Is this compatible for 3.05?

EDIT: Nevermind.
