having never setup or run a directory before, I wonder what tips or advice anyone can share on getting it setup right. Either from a directory structure or installation perspective?

I run a sports site and intend to launch a seperate directory (own dom) for sports sites. I gather mod rewrite is popular. I expect to do lots of reciprocal linking (to any sports sites world wide), initially include some links using nofollow if not reciprocating (just to pad it out), offer paid listings later once established (as doubt many want to pay initially).
Any recommendations for template sites? I found one which was pretty naff.

I found one page on this site previously (written by developer or co) which was good, any pointers apreciated. The article recommended against maikng the structure up as you go, I was thinking it would be good to grow the directory v.gradually else you have loads of empty areas - any thoughts?

Thanks

As a newbie myself... I found it much easier when the basic categories are in place before launching. Try to anticipate categories and place it. There are times when I get a submission where I scratch my head and wonder "where am I gonna put this site?"

Good luck on your site. I'm sure the people here in phpLD will be helpful to you as they are to me.

Content visible to registered users only.

Hopefully I'll be able to get my site up and running. Work is just over powering me atm, and to the point of knocking me out of commission for two days of feeling a bit under the weather. (im **censored****censored****censored****censored** stressssssed)

you can check around on the forums for free templates. another good friend Shabu(forum name: vegabond) (allthelook.com, allthe link.com, moz7.com) has made a few free templates that are very nice.

I have a diary about a directory I set up in the form of a blog.

You'll find it in my signature if you want to take a look. :)
