Lame Directories

So I have been submitting some websites to several directories and have come across a lot of 5 to 7 page rank directories that have 20 categories for every 1 link on the site and categories with links only contain 1 0r 2 links. So my question is, how do these crappy directories get such a high page rank? The can't all be buying expired domains as their names are clearly directory related. Anyways, I am just a bit curious.

Not sure but i were saw same type directory long time ago and when i research i found that
that were big directory and have pr 6 for main url and all subcategories have minimum pr3 but there are no single link approved this is because directory ownere delete all links after getting frustrated from spam {read in a article about that directory at DP forum :D }. and after 30-40 days he restore database after cleaning all crap links.

so may be your visited dir. in same condition, can you please share link so i can check and get an idea that why directory owner taking this decisions.

You will also find that people buy urls/sites with good PR and turn them into directories.

On another forum I found a discussion about a particular website that I had come across. I won't name the site. Wouldn't want to promote it by any means. Come to find out, they had a couple of links from a high pr website. The links were hidden as periods. There is another series of directories that all have a similar and unique style of background. I have come across probably 6 or 7 of these. All page rank 5 with 1000+ categories and maybe 200-300 links. Kind of suspicious. I doubt they all removed links to clean things out. Wouldn't be surprised if they were also buying hidden links or using a similar tactic. I have decided to steer clear of those directories. Oh, and they are all paid directories with a temporary discount on submission fees.
