almost blow myself up today

my hobby is relic hunting with a metal detector.

today i decided to go to the woods behind my house.

search about 100 yards and got i nice tone in my headset.

i started digging 2 inches down a hit something.
so i went a made the hole i bit bigger.

the third time i put my shovel in the ground something came up with the dirt.

what i saw almost made me **censored****censored****censored****censored** my self.
i saw a live 25 English howitzer shell complete with its detonator.

i waited 4 hours before the cops and bomb squad arrived.
they removed the shell and defused it.

Nice Find. You should ask them after they defuse it can you have it for the mantel above the fire place :>

The usually don't defuse them. (Too dangerous due to corrosion and too time consuming etc) They are nearly always destroyed under a controlled explosion.

you don't transport/keep live ammo from ww2. even 60 year old bullets have killed people.

and the fuse alone packs a big enough bang to seriously wound you.

German helmet/pins/items are the big price for me lol

You should really call the cops, that's some serious stuff. I've read about 60 years old bombs under the ground that have been detonating.
