First, if this should be in another section of the forum, please move.

The title of this post might be wrong. It could also have been "Are Your visitors leaving Your site to soon".

I have had a look at a lot of directories using the phpld script, and it seems to me that almost all have the same problem/fault, in my opinion. :)

When I look around a directory (unless I only go there to submit a site), and find a site/link that looks interesting, and click on the link, I am at the same time leaveing the directory.

Most people have left Your site, and about 90% will not come back, which mean no chance of getting a click on Your AdSense ads, or afilliate links, or whatever, or sell a featured link, and You loose money.

I think it would be a good idea if, when clicking on that link, it would open in a new browser.

PS! www.FastlineDirectory.net (http://www.FastlineDirectory.net) is an example of how I mean it should be done.

What do other people think about this ?

in Admin Area there is an option, where you can decide to let the links open in new browser or same browser..

Yes, but that were not my point, if it is or not.

And, if so, I guess a lot of users do not know about it, or do not think about it.

Any way, they are loosing money / customers leave too soon. :)

Yes, this is a good thing to send your guests to a new page. You have this option in your admin panel.
I am doing it this way on almost all websites I develop, everything not related to the homepage is opened in a new window. But never a pop-up!

However I am a bit confused, if anyone is respecting markup validation and webstandards, in strict doctypes the target="_blank" attribute is not allowed.
Here a quick reference:
http://www.robertnyman.com/2006/02/13/how-evil-is-the-target-attribute/

I know, most users here don't pay attention to much on webstandards but maybe it'll be one day. I am also going to remove all the links on my homepages that open in new windows.

Yes, you loose maybe some users this way, but think about the new way of building homepages, you will be probably get linked by quality websites or get some quality content.

this might sound odd , but i normally get afraid of using _blank because of pop up blockers ... most laymen who on seeing nothing happens from clicking get more confused and distressed . do you consider this as a problem ?

I see like this, if they know they have a pop-up blocker and they click a link, and nothing happens and they can't figure out why they're not seeing this link show up, then they don't deserve to even surf the net, because the demon of stupidity is evil :D

at the cost of sounding a little mean ;) , you do remember that as webmasters our job is to build websites for people with disabilities also .

Never done it before, as I have never come across one. By the way, I hope you didn't think I was making fun of people as that's not my job. C'mon where's your sense of humor ;)
