Hello, I am evaluating this directory and was wondering how search engine and seo friendly it is?

Question 1) I went to the list of examples of directories using PHP Link Directory and while I saw some with google page rank for the main page I would not find any with PR for any category or link listings. Are there some examples someone can post? I just want to make sure if people post to my directory they will get google PR passed to them. Thankyou.

Question 2) On the link of example sites there was a site running the phpLD directory script
I am looking for a different look from most directories and this was very nicely done. How difficult was something like this? It looks like the PHP Link Directory is very customizable and was wondering how much programming and what type of programming would be involved for a site like this.

Thankyou.

1) http://www.dance-forums.com/directory/

2) Yes, you just need to plan on spending time on the html in the templates. You can change things considerably.

It is friendly and PR will be passed, unless you use nofollow. The lack of the pr for subcategories is because 99% of phpld directories emerged after the last google pr update.

And btw., PR0 IS PR. So if the cat has PR0, it means (in 95% cases) that the page was spidered and is indexed. All those directories shall have pr0 on subcats.

Thankyou for the replies. I just downloaded the link directory and noticed the install instructions mention to set the directory permissions to 777. I am not sure what is meant by that. I use apollohosting for example. Does that mean to give those directories full read/write capability for everyone?

Yes. Usually it can be done in the file manager on your hosting account, or in an ftp program. As for the config.php, I usually change that back to 644 after succesful install, the others stay at 777.

How do I disable nofollow? (and what is it?)

Content visible to registered users only.

It tells search engine spiders/crawlers not to follow link. And by that, for example, not passing PageRank...

Anyway, to disable nofollow:
Directory Admin

System -> Edit Settings -> Directory:

*No follow on broken recipr.:

Select "Disabled"

Also, regarding Spiders/Crawlers/Robots, they are small programs that folow links and collect data(like meta tags).. For example, Googles robot is called GoogleBot.

Nice website: www.robotstxt.org/wc/robots.html
robots.txt example:
# This is for every spider!
User-Agent: *
# stay away from this
Disallow: /spiders/not/here/ #and everything in it

Save the following in your index directory(usualy public_html) as robots.txt ,it will tell spiders what they shouldn't index and what they should etc..

Hi einrad,

Just wanted to add that I started my directory in mid September and my home page now has a PR4 and my categories and subcategories pages are all PR2's.

Also you'll find heaps of info in this forum on how to change/edit the look of your directory.

Cheers
:)
