How do they define 'traffic rank'? Is that hits? Files called from the server? or Unique Visitors? Only the last one is the valid one.

It is calculated by the people who have the Alexa toolbar installed, so the numbers are not very accurate.

No but it is an excellent way to promote your site...

I use firefox 90% of the time but the other 10% I am browsing my site with IE and the alexa toolbar. because it's not used much by the general public a few browse's a day can really get you up the alexa rankings....and G is supposed to take this into account I am not sure how it maybe by weight or it may be by regularly spidering the top 100,000 alexa sites etc..

I'm not sure where you heard this but I have never seen anything to suggest that it's true. I don't think Google cares at all about Alexa ranking. I don't think very many other people care about it either. Most people don't even know it exists and of those who do most recognize it as a worthless measure of anything meaningful.

I agree that Alexa Rank is pretty easy to manipulate, but in the vacuum of public site ranking info that includes ONLY google pagerank, it is nice to have ANY other piece of data to work with, and I like that it attempts to show trends.

To manipulate your Alexa rank, setup several computers with the Alexa toolbar, and pop up pages on your site daily using something like System Schedule 3.4.7 (I also use this tool for PHP chronjobs because it is easier to pop-up browser windows than the windows scheduler). This won't get your site to number one, but it can take it out of obscurity (ie. bump it up a few million places).

Although I accept that Alexa Rank is not reliable, especially on the more obscure sites, I have been working on a mod to add it to the directory at:
