Changing size and positioning of the directory

OK i have searched the internet for 2 weeks now and am about to give up.

I need to find a way to change the size and positioning of the directory. For example as in Yahoo.com or Alibaba.com > would this be possible using php link directory.

If you can offer some help, please in layman terms, as i am totally new to CSS and PHP.

Yes, I know there are some threads here in the forums about this. You might want to look around. Unfortuantely, I have to leave for a few hours right now, but I'll try to search the forums later and see if I can find those threads.
