i've seen a few mentions of directories receiving spam. has anyone tried renaming submit.php or changing submission form/field names - does this not cut automated submissions?

I have seen both renamed submit.php and renamed field names.

Not sure if it cuts down - the makers of automatic submission tools will just go and ammend the details of your directory inside their program, and all is working again on their side.

Use some of the mods available for PHPLD. Or learn a bit of mysql and do bulk cleaning through myPhpAdmin - that's what I do sometimes, as most of such submissions come from few IP's.
