Ok, just to give you an an idea how big www.stumbleupon.com (http://www.stumbleupon.com) has become, I will tell you it was the #1 referrer to PHP Link Directory (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com) in the month of November 2006, and this is before I even thought twice about the site.
Fast forward to 2010, and getting traffic from Stumbleupon became quite rare. I got the impression that a few larger advertisers had learned to own certain categories and consistently dominated them (think Nettut).
So I tried to do a little advertising on Stumbleupon. It was on about $0.05 per click. I ran the advertising for a few days, and managed to get a couple of conversions. It was not total loss, but probably fell short of breaking even. I may try again at a later time, but I'm not ready to do that until they hopefully better develop the stumbleupon advertsing program to better entice advertisers.
Now I would still keep Stumbleupon on my list of alternatives to adwords, and worth checking again in the future. Now on the topic of Adsense, we also have a nice tutorial on Alternatives to Adsense (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/articlescript/Three_Popular_Alternatives_to_AdSense.php) as well.
