Hi Casey,

In your earlier tread (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=3413&highlight=upgrade#3413) you suggested that we can create a new folder, upload all files of the new version and point to the old DB. And this should works.

In the documentation, the Features page
"Easy Installation:
* Just upload the files to a folder, go to that folder, and follow the instructions. The only requirement is you must setup a mysql database name, login and password. The actual table creation is performed by the script.
* Customizing the look and feel is also easy. Just modify the header and footer files in the templates folder."

The bolded text states "The actual table creation is performed by the script". So will the installation of the new version that uses back the old DB will delete the existing table and create a new one?

Thanks.

This is how I upgrade:

My original folder for phplinkdirectory is "directory"
1. Create another folder with another name, "dir"
2. Upload all the phplinkdirectory RC5 files to the folder "dir"
3. Start another installation process by accessing to http://yourdomain.com/dir/
4. The installation process start automatically. Panel request for database name, server location, user name and password. Fill in the old database name and user name

Now, phplinkdirectory works in "Dir" but not working in the original location "Directory". The database is intact.

5. Rename "Directory" to "Directory old". Rename "Dir" to "Directory"
6. If you have modified the header.tpl, footer.tpl, main.tpl, top_bar.tpl and main.css before, you will have to do it once more.

I have not tried this but I believe you cannot just move the entire files in a folder to another or to the root by copy and paste. I am not sure but I think it doesn't work this way.

I believe (not sure, but logically should work), what you can do is to install phplinkdirectory again in the root. So you have to copy all the files in the zip file into the root and begin the installation process and point the database to the existing database.

However, make sure you do the backup of database available in your cpanel. Your original index.php will no longer show links.

Are you trying to make your phplinkdirectory's index.php as your home page?
If not, you are going to make your root drive a mess with all kinds of files and folders from phplinkdirectory and your linkage from the main site or home page to phplinkdirectory's index.php has to be redone...

I think it is going to be messy to move phplinkdirectory to root unless its index.php is the home page...
