Do you have to upgrade to v2 to get page ranking working or am i missing something really obvious here ?

Yes, version 1 did not include this feature.
Actually, v2 has many features that v1 does not.
If you need any help upgrading, please let me know.

how involved is the upgrade its taken me a while to get the looks just right . will i lose that information ?......losing data isnt a problem as i havent entered it yet

This is how an upgrade would work right now:
1) Download v2 and upload to a folder on your server. Follow the installation instructions.
2) Run this script {old url removed} (note: there is one bug if you will be planning to use url rewrite that should be resolved in 1-2 days).
3) Customize you template file as you did for v1.

I recommend you wait a few days. We will be releasing v2 RC3 shortly, as well as improving the script that imports your database. To give you some idea, I have about 25 of the v1 installed, and I am waiting too.

v2 is very exciting, but I think it is best for people with v1 to wait just a short time longer. We will certainly be glad to help you with upgrade once the small bug in step 2 above is addressed.

I think i will wait for the new release....if it uses the same tpl/index.html content.html and page_main.tpl i should be able to keep the changes that i have made to the look of the results etc?

I haven't done that myself yet, but I will know the answer soon. I just want that one item fixed above, and I will give it a shot and tell you.

The template system has changed completely, so you'll have to re-customize the looks of the directory to match your needs.

V2 is a complete rewrite.
