We are getting close to the release of a brand new product called Newstopica. It allows you to create categories and select rss feeds for each category. You can then display the latest news on your homepage. A cron job takes care of importing the news as often as you like. Using this script you can virtually create your own GoogleNews-like site.
Preview Here:
http://www.newstopica.com/directory/
Note: at least for the first several months this script will not be free.
Here is the starting price structure (subject to change based on demand)
$25 and you will retain a link in the footer
$75 no link required
Very shortly I will be able to start taking orders. If you are interested, please reply to this post, and let me know which version you would like to purchase.

Hi david,
Can you give me more details on it?
I have a site http://www.enewss.com
1) Who is providing you news sources?
2) How many different categories of news do you have?
3) How much customization is available.
4) I would like to try first and then purchase.
Please respond.
thanks
sri

Content visible to registered users only.
All news sources come from RSS feeds. For example, these:
http://www.cnn.com/services/rss/
There is no limit to the number of categories.
You can customize just like you do with phpLD.
It will cost $25 to try it. That price will be increasing based on demand.
If you are interested still, let me know. There will be more information available soon.
Thanks,
David

What's the purpose of having that much news displayed on a directory site?
I've done the same sort of thing, but only display a few articles at a time. These are articles that are similar to the target of my directory. All of the available articles are displayed on one "news" page. All of the articles are cached and imported once every few hours, so displaying them is very fast.

Whoops, forgot to log in. ;-)
I think I get it, you're using phpLinkDirectory for news instead of links?
David

Correct. This is to help you build a site similar to www.topix.net or http://news.google.com/

david,
I am new to PHP link directory project.
What is the connection between newstopica & PHPLD?
Do i have to run PHPLD to use newstopica scripts?
Also more questions on newstopica.
1) Can i add my own RSS feeds from different newspapers?
2) Can i customize the look and feel of categories?
Can you give me more examples and templates for news?

I am just curious to know,
if you are just selling RSS reader, where we provide RSS news resources and you do the display work.
Basically, what i want to do is
Display news feeds from each newspaper in their own table on a page.
Is this possible?
I liked the topix.net display format.
You said, we can have a site similar to that. They have got the images and descriptions too along with link. Will your scripts accomplish it?
Also interested in some templates.
I may go for $75 option.
Thanks for selling scripts. How long will we get the support?

Newstopica uses the same framework as phpLD. Yes, you can certainly pick feeds from different newspapers, and display the feeds on separate pages and tables. The template system is the same as phpLD, which uses smarty. We can provide limited support here in the forums after purchase. Please register in the forums so we can notify you when the release is ready.
Thanks,
David

Hi,
I would like to know if Newstopica could be used (or modified) to grab an affiliate program XML data feed weekly by cron (prices don't change very often), populate a MySQL database with the data, and present the results through directory categories and detailed link pages (separate pages for each link (http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=350&p=1875))?
Later,
Bangkok Bob

That would require 10-20 hours of programming (at least).

Hi David,
I installed Newstopica script and got it running right out of the box.
After that I spent about ten minutes with rss_parser.php to mod it to read an affiliate xml data feed (which uses custom feed tags).
So now I can have a directory of hotel listings (which are all commission paying affiliate links).
I plan to look at other affiliate programs with xml data feeds to see if Newstopica can monetize my websites more.
Best regards,
Bangkok Bob

I just spent the last hour creating the main site for Newstopica.
What do you think?
www.newstopica.com
Is it possible to have it display any RSS feeds?
David

Content visible to registered users only.
I'm not sure if I understand the question, but that is the focus of the application: to pull in and then display RSS feeds.

HI
sounds useful, i would be very inertested in a hybrid of phpld and newstopica. ie For every category in the link directory I could add a feed. Also is the feed cached or stored in db?
Regards
David

Hi David
Cheers for reply.
Any comments on a combination of phpld and newstopica?

Content visible to registered users only.
I think what you are wanting to do is show a specific feed for each category, so that you have some content that is unique (and even changing). It would be relatively easy to add a field in the category page of admin to pull in results from rss (but not insert them into mysql).
At this time, I do not have plans to do an integration of the two, but it might be considered at a later time.
Right now my priorities are:
1. Finishing the Regional Directory
2. Supporting and improving Newstopica when needed
3. Moving forward with phpLD 3.0 which may offer more flexibility for what you are asking.
I know I could help you with your request, but certianly it would require more programming. If you are willing to pay for this, I can see to it that you get help directly on your site. Otherwise, I think you'll see some of what you are looking for in the next few months.
