View Full Version : rss feeds and how they work........

Hi everyone.

I'm fairly new to rss feeds, although I have a fair idea how they work, but I have a question about how to implement them. The easiest way is to tell you what I have in mind, then ask how is the best way to go about implementing it.....

What I want is a series of finely tuned link exchange categories, with sub-categories underneath them. As an example, I might have a catgeory called Sheep, with sub-categoies of Sheep Farming, Sheep Syndrome, Sheep Behaviour and Sheep Breeding. What I would like is for a link partner to add their link to any of the sub-categories, but to display all links from the four sub categories under the umbrella category "Sheep", as they all bear relevance. What is the best way to go about doing this?

Is it:
a) to ask them to create four seperate pages, each called the same as the releavnt sub-category, with a seperate rss feed for each
b) to not have the sub-categories, then provide a feed just for the "sheep" category (if I do this, how does the rss feed handle multiple pages within one category????)
c) another solution which I haven't yet though of

I hope the question makes some kind of sense, and I also hope that somebody is able to answer it. Also, is it easy for people to add rss feeds into their existing sites, or is this something I am better offering to do on their behalf? i.e. can i provide a simple help file which will tell them how to go about it, or is it quite a complex task whichit would be easier for me to do?

The idea is to enable lots of link partners to display links between themselves, within their own site templates, with me acting as the link master. Once they have the code in place, I can build their link campaigns for them, taking stress away from them, but adding greater incentive for people to link to me! :D

Thanks for the programme, so far it seems to do everything I want it to do - maybe I'm being greedy with this plan detailed above, but I think this bit of kit is good enough to handle it.....hopefully nobody will burst my bubble!

Here is one simple tool that allows you to insert any feed onto a webpage, assuming you have PHP on the server.

There are other such scripts that do the same thing in javascript and asp, but you might have to google them.

With regard to your question, I think you are wanting an RSS feed to display all links from the main category? Or maybe you are wanting to display all links in html on the main category (not just the rss)?

I know we could do this for you, but it might require a little bit of custom work, in which case we would be greatly appreciative of a donation, and then we will be happy to spend a little time getting you exactly what you need.

Hi David - I did email, but i'm not sure if it got through to you. Sure, a donation is on its way - what email addy do I send it to, and what is a respectable amount? I dont want to offend with too little, but my bank manager is frowning at me a lot recently.....

Anyway, what I am looking for is a feed which would be a simple install for my clients, but which would (somehow) display all the subcategories within a given main category - hopefully over many different pages. Is this at all possible? I dont want to give partners a link feed with 2000 links and expect it to be shown on one page, but I dont want their installation to be a huge task, as nobody will bother. If all links were in one category (no subcategory), how would the feed cope with a page-split - or would it? If the links were spread across 5 subcategories, would this require 5 seperate feeds?

As you can tell, I have the basic principles in my head, its the nitty-gritty functionality which I am struggling to figure out.....

Any and all halp appreciated!

OK, I'm having a dumb day. Just spotted the paypal button at the top of every page. I'll go and hide in the corner and wait for everyone to stop laughing.......
