View Full Version : Link Submit no longer works after moving SW to new directory

I've added phpLD in a directory XXXX within HTTPDOCS. I would like to rename the directory to YYYY. If I go into the control panel of my host and rename the directory, what do I need to do within phpLD to let the SW know that the directory name has changed?
Is it same to rename the directory, or should I just delete it and reupload the SW to the new directory? I would only lose about a days work, so it phpLD stores the directory name in multiple places, I'll do this.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hey Doug,
What is SW?
You should be able to just rename the folder.
If I knew more I could provide more.
Let me know.

I've tried that and it seems to work. I wanted to ask the question in case I continued to develop the directory for weeks and then suddenly found I had to reverse all my work. However, it seems to be working, so I'll just hope.
Thanks very much for the response.

Installed phpLD in a directory and renamed it. Everything worked afterwards.
Then on a completely different site, within HTTPDOCS created a sub-directory "sites". Got everything working. Then erased everything in HTTPDOCS and copied all the files from "sites" to HTTPDOCS. Directory looks fine, unless I do a "Submit Link" command. In this case the directory looks fine, but the "submit link" page is virtually empty.
This can be seen if one goes to www.directory-france.com.
Any ideas (short of erasing and reloading the SW) to fix this?
Desperately hoping,

Why not simply install into the right directory in the first place?
If you're wanting to do some things before making it live, raname the index file like so
http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=985
Then after you're done, rename it back.
I just don't see the purpose as to why you need to install and move etc.
Thanks

Doug, could you elucidate on your shorthand, please? I have not one clue what "SW" refers to....

There are other items that aren't working either. For example, if I go to the admin URL I see only a blank page.
It appears that one can rename a directory, but not move the SW to another directory (in my case from httpdocs/sites to httpdocs).
I could reload the SW but then would lose all my categories and also have to manually record and reload all the link information.
Any suggestions how best to proceed? I don't mind reloading the SW so much as losing the category definitions and link information.

Doug, you didn't answer the ladies question about "SW" (Which you're overly using).
If you reload, that doesn't mean you'll lose everything. It should pipe right in and show up fine.
Try it.

The reason I didn't answer the question about SW (software) is that the posts crossed and I didn't see it until now. I have a couple of other sessions up and didn't expect a response so quick.
By SW I mean the files resulting from unzipping phpLD. To elaborate, I unzipped the files in httpdocs/sites, setup the categories and added links, then copied the entire contents of httpdocs/sites to httpdocs/ (after first deleting some old files in httpdocs).
I accept any criticisms that I have approached this in an unsuitable way. I could go into why I've done this, but it's all water under the bridge now.
When you suggest reload, what does this mean? If it means unzipping the original files and doing the install from scratch, then wouldn't that overwrite existing files and losing data. Or should I just upload the install folder (deleted after the install) and repeat the install?
Sorry for the really stupid questions. I'm not very technical.
Thank you for the assistance,
Doug

Okay, now that we have your shorthand stuff out of the way, here's the thing you need to know to handle this: as long as you dump the database (use phpMyAdmin, export the db to a file on your hard drive), you're safe. The db is where ALL your info lives.
So to move to another folder, domain, host, whatever - all you have to do is upload the program to the new home, install, then drop all the tables in the new database, and import the old db dump using phpMyAdmin.
I've done this a dozen times. Works every time without hassles.

Thank you.
I don't know what phpMyAdmin is, but I'll find out and do as you suggest.
However, it is a bit after 2AM my time, so just wanted to drop you a thank-you before I went to bed.

Ah, yup.... sleep is good.
Check your cPanel (AKA plesk, vdesk, ensim) through your host. You should see an icon for "mysql databases". Click that, page down until you see a link to "phpmyadmin". Click that. Dig around, and if you need more help, post back here or email me at vkaryl *at* bytehaven *dot* com. I'll be gone a while tomorrow, truck servicing/windshield replacing/license registering day - a 140 mile round trip, but rest assured I'll check in here as soon as I can.
Let us know how you fare....
