Default Asking the Right Questions

This is in response to The Link Building Bubble, and asking the right questions so we can move forward. Here are the questions from the article, but maybe there are some other ideas we can discuss too:

1. With the rise of big data, might smaller players be able to harness larger data sets without incurring a large expense? (ex. DuckDuckGo)

2. Now that Facebook gets nearly as much traffic as Google, might directories be able to benefit from integration with the Facebook Graph and other tools?

3. Has the nature of the link changed where directories need to think about linking to what is important NOW versus being an old catalog. For example, sites like Business Insider, Pop URLs and Huffington Post in many ways harness the “power of the now”.

4. Might there be other types of data that can be categorized and organized beyond the traditional link? For example, coupon sites are big and there are a few successful phpLD users that use our script for that purpose. Other examples might include videos, images or feeds.

I imagine a decent human edited link directory can make it in a Niche market or a multifaceted directory with several different interfaces. In otherwords a directory with multiple niches with separate domains (sub domains) and pages for each one of those niches. And a central page for administration and promoting the niche pages.

I'm leaning toward content aggregation myself. There's so much great content spread across so many different sites. The search engines will give you one good page several lessor pages then a really great one. A 'directory' owner or 'content aggregator' can weed out the bad pages then continue by adding their own.

You know you're kinda on the right track when you do a search for something you're looking for and most of the results point to your own websites. But there's a downside.... you have to do a lot more work to find new sites and content.

Here is a Matt Cutts video (Aug 8, 2013) talking about "Unnatural links from your site." They are saying paid or sponsored links are ok; but that they shouldn't pass page rank.

Thanks for sharing the video I did not know that... Looks like I need to work on not sharing page rank.

As a marketer, its about the niche. Become the best and offer marketing services such as video marketing, social media and blogging to the companies on your directory. I don't have a php directory but the same still applies to all directories. Become the authority and make your services available to the customers on your directory.

My directory makes me thousands of dollars, not from the directory itself. From building great relations with my customers on the directory.

THAT IS THE REAL MEANING OF SOCIAL. I hope this helps.

A few of the comments on that article are spot on.

I just read somewhere that Google's latest proposals (reparations) have been rejected by the EU, so it does look like the tide may be turning; at least in the EU anyway. Unfortunately the US Government didn't have the balls to tread on Google's toes and gave up and if I'm being cynical, was more than likely related to tax income for the US treasury. But even though I don't always agree on many EU policies (cookie control etc), it does look like they are at least trying to do the right thing here.

Hopefully, if the EU does the right thing, other jurisdictions might follow suit.

We all know the ultimate goal is to have us all pay them for our promotion, rather than being a search engine it will become a new Yellow Pages, giving joe blogs who does a search results based on who pays G the most

I don't know Danny Sullivan's reply to the WPN post, but he said:

I am just going to be doing a little more watching, and a little less investing. I do predict at some point in the next year Google is going to see some quarters where they struggle in PPC revenue. I believe they have already set course for this scenario, and just going watch and see if I'm right.

And let's consider this scenario...

Internally, Google is having problems with traffic. People are using sites like Wikipedia, Yelp, Bing, Facebook, and Amazon directly and no longer relying on Google as much. Since Google has things like automatic search, they can still inflate numbers for investors. Sure, mobile is growing, but people aren't clicking on ads there.

Another quarter (Q3) is looming, and investors are going to freak out if Google has to explain that they have lost traffic to search and nobody is clicking on mobile ads. They have to act now or else the Board of Directors is going to oust Larry Page and the founders don't even come into play anymore.

In such a scenario we start seeing increasingly desperate measures to maximize clicks on SERPs, and probably they cut payouts in programs like adsense, so they can show increasing revenue there as well, which is good for the PPC bottom line.

I'm not saying I'm right, but there is evidence to support my position.

I don't know why Facebook don't take on G.
Most people are logged into and using facebook so why not integrate a search enging where by no need to go to google, after all G is having a go at pulling business away from FB with its G+

Mmm , Facebook vs Google. To me, that's like a choice of taking strychnine or cyanide. I don't really care for either.

Well you are spot on for that comment. I just decided to do a little research on some local competitors sites that have paid ads with google. Both sites that I researched currently pay Google for ads and now rank high in the search. Both sites have doorway pages that go to their main sites and both have paid blog links and other obvious paid for pr links that are site wide or home page links.
Google is not a proper search engine and has many things not good about it at all and soon hopefully people will see through the smoke and mirrors.

Well a simple search for a Hotel, only TWO results shown on screen without scrolling that are not Google paid ads.

Yeah, it kind of puts the so called 'guaranteed first page on Google' services into perspective.
